A coin hidden in a fish's mouth. That's how Jesus, in the Gospel of Matthew, solves a money problem. No blind people regain their sight, no storms calm down, no one is resurrected. It sounds like an urban legend—until you understand the tax at stake and why that exact coin.

Jesus had simple ways of paying. He chose the hardest to believe: sending a fisherman to pull out the only fish with the exact coin in its mouth. That's not a coincidence. It's a lesson.

In this study we explore:
• What the temple tax (the didrachma) was and its origin in the ransom of Exodus 30
• Jesus's trick question to Peter: Who do kings collect taxes from, their own children or strangers? • The Greek words huioi (sons) and allotrioi (strangers), and why "sons are exempt"
• Why the Son of God's house owed nothing to the temple—and yet paid anyway
• The stater: the only coin whose value exactly covers the debt of two people
• "For me and for you"—a single payment, made by the only one free to pay

The heart of it all: there is a real debt, impossible to avoid. And someone who didn't owe it pays it, with a resource only he could find. Peter didn't gather the money. He simply cast the line and trusted. It's the cross, in miniature.

If you feel a debt you don't know how to repay, this story doesn't ask any more of you. It tells you that the exact coin has already been found and paid.
