I’m a Japanese person who has been living in Minnesota for 10 years. Your video happened to pop up in my feed, and I was drawn in by the blue fabric with the crane pattern in the thumbnail, so I watched it for the first time.
The Jinbei(traditional Japanese loungewear) looks fantastic on you. We don’t usually think of layering it with a shirt underneath, so that was really inspiring to see. The leather tool pouch you’re wearing over your shoulder also matches beautifully — it all comes together so nicely!!

I like how you structured this video. Your narration of your shopping with little tidbits about your trip in general was just right. Really kept me interested the whole way through.

Oh my gosh!! Loved this video. My daughter and her family have been to Japan and my 19 year old grandson has been twice on his own. He texted me and said “grandma, you would love it here. Awesome thrift stores”. My husband and I are planning a trip. Can’t wait to see what you do with your finds. 😊

I think those copper trays are perhaps chocolate bar molds.
Stencils are katagami, the paper is soaked in persimmon tannins to make them water resistant.
You would print a rice paste resist onto the cloth before dyeing.
Japanese textile nerd here, I would need a shipping container for everything I’d want!

This was so fun - thank you for taking us along! I've mostly traveled in Europe and South America so it's fun to see what Japan has to offer in case I get to go there. Also I know I'm in the right place because it's super normal for me to be like "oh my god I have too much stuff this is ridiculous" and then 15 minutes later decide I need to go thrifting. High five for being a fellow collector / maximalist / hoarder in training and I hope your decluttering is enjoyable and not stressful!

What a nice group of shops and finds! I really like your camera work in the shops and how you display all your finds at home and recall the trip. You should consider another separate video of outdoor scenes, maybe looking out the train window at what you pass or on a bus ride out of the city. Also, the restaurants you visited and your favorite dishes, etc. Those could also make great episodes. I'm sure people would like seeing more of the bonsai garden and any other natural spaces you spent time in.

I am a 76 year old great grandma. Haven't seen TV much so I just got to your Japan vacation. It was a great video. What made you decide on Japan for vacations? The fabrics for a quilt. How fun to think of your vacation when you see it or cuddle under it. Oh and I love that Matt is on the videos. See you next week.

I couldn’t believe you didn’t pick up either of the blue and orange fabrics! Especially that second one! That blanket under the first fabric was beautiful too and I was certain you would have picked that up. You did get a bunch of beautiful fabrics and I’m sure it was hard to choose.

I lived in Kanazawa for over 5 years and it's nice to see that it's still welcoming to tourists. I loved my time there so much, it's a shame you didn't get to experience some of their other crafts (they're famous for kutani-ware pottery and a special hand painting of kimono). It made me feel so homesick for my city, thank you for visiting it and enjoying your time there 🥰

Fabric is one of the BEST ways to sample the art of another land or culture. If it moves you, it’s not weird….do as you FEEL! Japan has the most incredible subtle beauty and fascinating people. I hope you keep going back. Thanks for allowing us to come along……
