There have been a few extinction level events that wiped out many species. The only reason there haven't been more is our friendly neighbor Jupiter. It has been great at intercepting comets which could ruin your day, week, month etc....

I was thinking about this just today: "Hunter\Gatherer" seems to have become synonymous with "Nomad" and that just isn't the case in every environment.  In my part of the world: Deer DO NOT migrate <<<they live their entire life within 1.5 miles of their birthplace. Turkey (the large bird) do not migrate either, so that's large sources of protein when you add the river full of fish.  What really nailed me down to this is that we sit smack in the middle of some pretty large migration every year so it's the perfect case for NOT moving, but settling. I've always believed that what we call "gathering" is simplistic. They were in tune with nature so they knew how seeds worked. Why do you think they were tracking the solstices for so long? <<<it's not so they knew when to break out the bikini's :)

Those small groups probably went underground or in cave systems

This is not too far away from Flores, the island where the hobbit people lived. They were around 50,000 years ago which is after this super volcano. Wonder how these time lines match up?

Gah:: statistical haploid drift alone can account for all these mtDNA "bottleneck" accounts. But it's much more dramatic to imagine near extinction events

So, potentially, the 50k year decrease in population actually may have made the human species more evolutionarily fit, as opposed to the popularly accepted idea of potentially "less fit" due to "less genetic variation...," as it took 50,000 years, as opposed to a few?

The Toba erruption would certainly have had an effect on the climate.  Food would have become scarce and it would have affected different places worse than others.  A shortened summer in the more northern/southern regions, further from the equator, which already have a short growing season, would have a much worse effect on plants being able to grow to fruiting/seeding, whereas in regions approaching the equator, the normally longer growing seasons would have still allowed some plants to fully grow.  That would explain why groups closer to the equator were less affected.

Being trapped in Scotland is worse than the near extinction event maybe caused by the earlier one.

What happened to denisovan and Neanderthal populations during this time? They were both around at the time.

Look up the first eruption of Krakatoa in 525 AD. It cause a “year without a summer”.

Or the after effects of an Alien nuclear war fought on Earth.

7:41 the planet has tried to kill us for a long time. Somehow we still survive. If something like that happened today, it would be much harder to survive. People today are too reliant on modern technology not a lot of people are good scavengers or hunters. People today are so lazy they call an Uber driver to deliver their McDonald’s because they can’t even drive 3 miles down the road from their house to get it themselves.

Looks like getting a warmer climate should benefit most of us. 😊
