I like Glen Close in Fatal Attraction, but she's even better in Dangerous Liaisons.

Christie had a terrific year in '65.

Bette Davis for “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”   - I think that is one of the best performances of her career and she should’ve won.

Glenn Close! Wow! No one else could've played Alex with such terrifying depth!

But I would also argue that her performance in Mary Poppins was also iconic

Judy Garland should have won for A Star is Born. Plus at least nominated for the Wizard of Oz.

I been watching the Academy Awards for years. I’ve seen a few upsets. But the biggest mistake that I’ve ever seen or heard of was definitely Bette Davis’s lost for her performance in Whatever happened to baby Jane ! She was absolutely ROBBED!

Still can't believe that in 1975 Art Carney  beat out Albert Finney (Murder on the Orient Express) and Al Pacino (Godfather Part II)  for best actor.   My vote would have gone to Finney for an amazing performance.

It Happened One Night was a 1934 film

Another iconic performance that didn't win the Academy Award was Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. When one thinks about Sigourney Weaver we think about her battling those creatures.

That year the Oscar went to Marlee Matlin in Children of a Lesser God. It was deserved.

Harrison Ford in Witness.

Brando was definitely robbed that year. The only reason Bogart got it was because the industry knew he was dying, so they  wanted to honour him while he was still alive.

Richard Burton should have won Best Actor for Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff.

Of those nominated, Jack Nicholson's turn  in "A Few Good Men" stands out as an iconic performance that didn't win. On the other hand, the iconic performances by Robert Shaw ("Jaws"), Meg Ryan ("When Harry Met Sally"), and Jack Lemmon ("Glengarry Glen Ross") weren't even nominated. Which is still hard to believe.

Oscarman I just love your youtube videos!  I wish I had a friend like you to talk about movies all the time.

I’m glad Robert Donat won, he was excellent as Chips. Gable, as usual was just playing a variation of himself. Also, he’d already won  recently for IHON.

Thanks for this video spotlighting the most beloved performances which have stood the test of time. It’s striking each of them is an important part of film history, still feels relevant today, and got nominated for an Oscar - But didn’t win!

I think these performances being so iconic, so popular, and so adored actually hurt their chances at winning the Oscar. Some voters may have thought, after much success already, they didn’t “need” such a prestigious award too. In my eyes, it was a factor in Julia Robert not winning for Pretty Woman. At the time, she was a very popular actress in a very, very popular movie - So, her cup could have appeared as full enough (maybe even overflowing).

Here are a few other legendary Oscar-nominated performances. All of them are fondly remembered and would never be forgotten (unlike ironically a few Oscar-winning performances).
Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot
Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie
Anne Bancroft in the Graduate
Sigourney Weaver in Aliens
Alec Guiness in Star Wars
Pat Morita in the Karate Kid
Ian McKellen in the Lord of the Rings
Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean

I really enjoyed your latest video. I think the performances in it are so iconic many people might actually think they won - My mom continues to believe Humphrey Bogart won for Casablanca and gets disappointed every time I correct her.

Many in Hollywood were appalled by KANE's depiction of the character they assumed was based on beloved Marion Davies and yes Davies was hugely popular withing the industry for her philanthropy and her long standing as the leading hostess of the era at San Simeon and her Ocean House.

In THE SOUND OF MUSIC, the "Argument Scene " between Georg and Maria allowed Julie Andrews to display her formidable dramatic skills.

This is a killer video. I saw many of these films & performances & agree with you on many here.
