Shishi's approach to sumo is like my approach to video games. I get stuck, I read a tutorial, I learn about a movement set I had totally forgotten, beat the section and then I am totally tunnel visioned on all those new fancy moves that I neglect the basics until I hit a wall again.

I love Shishi in sumo, because his name is fun to shout when he wins and I can never be ready for the level of awkwardness he brings with "his style of sumo". But I do miss his funny crab claw twerk

According to Chris Sumo's bio of Shishi the Kanji for his name combines the characters for Lion and Ruler. Making him the Lion King.

I think this breakdown best expresses why Shishi has fans. An incredibly competent wrestler...with a dozen coked-out chimpanzees in his head.

But idk if I'd have him any other way, and I hope he reaches ōzeki in exactly this state.

In my two years watching sumo, Shishi's given me the most heartache, just due to his volatility.

Your breakdown felt exactly like that ride, I was given hope, then it was shattered, and that cycle repeated for 30 minutes.
By the end, I was willing to believe he may just be on the cusp of greatness, finally.

And then you dropped the rotator cuff part and my heart sank again.

Shishi please I beg you, my heart cannot take much more 🙇

I'm surprised you didn't mention his footwork more (other than the first step on tachiai). Just using real time eye test, when he's on it seems like his feet are under him. When he's off, he's leaving his feet behind. Shishi is fun to watch! Thanks for the really good breakdown, you've given me more to look for.

i started watching grand sumo about a year ago, and i quickly decided shishi was gonna be the guy i support. somehow i always manage to support teams/people in sports that are decent but always manage to miss out on greatness in heartbreaking fashion.

I love these deep dives. No one else is putting out content like this! Thanks so much.

Shishi is like a baby elephant just learning to control its trunk; for now, while learning, it keeps stepping on it and doing all sorts of funny shit—but just wait until it masters it!

Started watching Sumo in March 26: Hated Shishi with a passion

May 26: Completely mystified by the chaos

July 26: Consumed by the chaos, Shishi is the God of WTF Sumo.

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy music was a nice touch ✨️

The man is a grinder, but he keeps trying. I cheer when he’s on point, shake my head when he seems to have bouts of amnesia, and bet with friends on if he goes up or down in maegashira, or if he drops to juryo when he’ near the bottom. Basically break even on the bets because he is too chaotic to predict

I'm not good at analyzing but I could always see the Shishi was always comfortable doing what he did and seemed like he was always trying to do something different.
