In a majestic fjord off the coast of Bergen, Norway, warships are hunting a German submarine. The submarine could simply dive and hide; no one would find it. After all, this is the U36—a super-weapon equipped with the quietest propulsion system in the world. But the submarine isn't allowed to dive. More precisely, the trainee commanders—who are taking turns sweating at the periscope here for a week—cannot simply run away if they ever hope to take command of a submarine.

They have to fight. They must stay near the surface and make split-second decisions on which course to steer to avoid getting too close to the attackers—or the many civilian ferries and fishing boats, or the fjord's rocky shores.
The so-called "Perix" exams are "dangerous" and "pure stress," says Lars Gössing from the bridge of the *Main*—a tender supply ship used by the commander of the 1st Submarine Squadron in Eckernförde to launch a mock attack on his own submarine.
Gössing served as a submarine commander for many years and is now responsible for training the next generation of commanders. He knows exactly how his men feel as they stand at the periscope a few hundred meters away and 13.5 meters below the surface. But he also knows it is necessary to really put them through the wringer.
"We’re going to make it tough for him!" he says, referring to Lieutenant Commander Patrick, who is now stepping up to the periscope in the U36’s control room to face the challenge.
For Patrick, it is about realizing his lifelong dream as a submarine commander: "finally wearing the white cap." But to do that, he will have to step up his game, because the first few days of the course didn't go quite as well as he had imagined. And no one gets a free ride in the commander's course; after all, this course—which most candidates only get a single chance to attempt—is designed specifically to weed out the military elite.
