DeForest Kelley had more chops than any actor to ever appear in anything Star Trek, ever. Acting was second nature to him. Roddenberry offered him any roll he asked for if he would be in his new Wagon Train to the stars TV show. Kelly chose McCoy's character because he thought there was a better opportunity for some humor. "He would put on the costume, step off the porch and be the character" to sort of quote Leonard Nimoy. You two are doing a wonderful job I am really enjoying this Happy Hour. Cheers!

I'll take Star Trek the Slow Motion Picture over any of that ridiculous JJ Abrams crap any time.

Criminally under rated movie. I saw the 40th anniversary re release in 4k at the cinema. It was gorgeous.

John Dykstra is not only a special effect genius, but an artist. The movie has two bookend sequences: the camera twirls around the Klingon cruisers at the beginning, and the camera twirls around the Enterprise at the end. This bookending gives the movie a good sense of closure.

I saw this in the theater with my mom who loved Star Trek.  ❤️

The first film has a very 2001 Space Odessey feel to it.

Every damn time you put up one of these, you ‘make’ me have to book out 6hrs of life... 4 to watch the stream then 2 for the film... every time! 😅
... and not a moment wasted!

Kirk's dental uniform is top shelf

Had to pause this on the livestream, to watch the movie again. It is a slow film, but it is wonderful to watch.  Sad that so many of these actors are gone now. Different times, for shure.

Huge fan of Burnett. Also, thank you for speaking out on the death of David Dorn. You did nothing wrong!

I remember the actress playing Lt Illia was brought to Australia for a promotion of the movie when it was released in Australia. I remember as a teenager seeing her at a department store in Brisbane, and I was literally one of a handful of people at that event. Star Trek didn’t have a lot of popularity in those days.

I always wished Star Trek had maintained the look and feel of the photon torpedoes from this movie. I always thought they were fantastic!

I saw it 41 years ago. We saw Alien the day before - they both opened the same day. No one today could believe how rare a new science fiction was let alone 2 much anticipated films. Alien was of course the better choice, but having seen STTMP again last week it wasn't as slow as I remembered it, and had some beautiful images. We'd waited so many years - never thinking we'd even get a Trek film that we enjoyed it anyway. I still have the 2 souvenir programmes sold on the day.

I listened live yesterday and I'm listening again today at work. Bravo fellas

I remember reading the novelisation when the movie came out. Something that always stayed with me was the mention of a deliberate decision by Starfleet to choose social throwbacks to captain their ships, because the more advanced  members of the Federation would not be able to make the hard, snap decisions that space exploration called for. The latter might even find themselves 'going native', and abandoning the mission.

This was decades before current producers started to believe that space exploration required oodles of empathy, and the shedding of copious tears.

I grew up with TNG, but this was my first taste of the original crew. I was captivated by the cold hard sci fi of it. The mundane logic and order of things made it feel so much more real than other movies and shows of its time.

Spock’s arc in the movies of integrating his human half with his Vulcan side is beautifully summed up in Undiscovered Country: “Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end”.

It was so nice to have a serious long form discussion that wasn't being derailed every 5 minutes for super chats and they weren't trying to crack jokes, use a sound board, and make dumb impressions.

Also; I had forgotten what Vger looked like until RMB pulled out his Vger model. That's the exact same design Star Trek Online uses to portray a Borg queen's ship.

The confident hand of Robert Wise as director is so prevalent.

Guys, you two together are a dream team of just any movie talk. Do it every day forever!!!
