A walk exploring the fantastic modern history of Harringay, Hornsey, Alexandra Palace and Muswell Hill. Our walking tour starts with a stroll around the Harringay Warehouse District with its fascinating industrial history as the centre of piano manufacture in the UK, and the home of Maynards confectionary famous for their Wine Gums. From here we walk along the ancient Green Lanes and answer the question of why the borough is spelt Haringey but the neighbourhood Harringay. The route then passes along Wightman Road, over Hornsey Station, Tottenham Lane and Hornsey High Street. Here we admire the 13th century St. Mary's Church Tower before entering Alexandra Park. This exploration of uncanny Haringey ascends the hill to the magnificent Alexandra Palace, first built in 1873 with its amazing views of London. The walk ends at the location of the Mossy Well in Muswell Road, an ancient site of pilgrimage.

Down that little lane with the Smithfield Refrigerator Works sign, is where Pool Motors used to be; a garage which was exclusively for London cabs. I used to go there with my dad when he needed his fixed. The forecourt and dark corners were full of bits of old taxis, buried amongst other bits of old taxis. Seeing these icons being dissected and operated on; it felt like one of the most secret and magical places on earth.

Loved this video brought back a memory long forgotten involving Maynards Wine Gums. When i was eight my dad took me to a newsagent in Chingford Hatch London after asking for a quarter of wine gums the shop assistant said i was too young and i would only sell me fruit pastilles instead. I have never forgotten this all these years later.

Maynard's originally started the business in 1880 from their kitchen in Stamford hill, they had a sweetshop next door to their house, before moving to northcote road Stamford hill

Harringay seems to have a problem similar to parts of Vancouver, and especially to my neighbourhood, Cedar Cottage. There were a number of areas that had a mixture of light industrial and residential, and they all became popular places for the creative community. Trouble is, people who wanted to exploit the real estate potential bought property--and the artists, musicians and actors were priced out by developers who built residential buildings to sell to their friends.

It's an unfortunate affliction of many cities today.

There's one constant that you would appreciate. The deities of the buried streams and rivers have not relinquished their domains. I know many of the crows as personally as they will allow, the local ravens have even paid me a visit: the racoons and coyotes make regular appearances to assert their connection to Jones, Gibson's, Davey, Canoe, and Gladstone Creeks--all forgotten by the bipeds, but very much patrolled by the feathered and the furry.

John! I'm so happy to be starting my week by watching this walk! I lived on Muswell Road at about the same time you were living thereabouts (during my studies at LAMDA '91-'92)-- bit of a commute to the drama school from there, but my British boyfriend had found us a flat on the top floor of one of the old terrace houses, with Ally Pally looming over us on the hilltop. Many, many walks were taken in that park. Tears sprang to my eyes when you turned onto the bottom of my old road... you were just about to pass my old place on the right, but you did a cut and picked things up just as you approached the Mus Well house. Soooo close! But it was a true joy to virtually stroll up that road again after so long. Much love and many thanks from Stratford, Ontario.

Thanks John! It certainly has changed. Back when I worked for the Council, it was a very dangerous place.....or maybe that was because I worked for the Poll Tax Department!! Great to see how times change!

Reminders of a happy childhood. My old stomping ground. Used to live off Wightman Road, and Grew up just off West Green Road. The old railway back then was strewn with Victoria rubbish. Maynards, Bassets in Wood Green. Lotus Cars in Hornsey and The Harringey Stadium.
I miss the place so much but so much has changed!

The Mossy Well location brings up an interesting aspect of psychogeography in that it relies so much on our imagination. When we think we're in the right spot where something used to be, we're satisfied that we've made a connection, but obviously there is a huge disparity between what we imagine and objective reality. The first Mossy Well you experienced was determined to be a delusion, but it provided the same experience at the time as when you got it right. All in all, even when you get it right, the practice relies on delusion, just like history itself. It's all a game of imagination.

I lived in Priory Road for the first ten years (from 1943) and was christened in St George’s Church. It was on the receiving end of the attentions of the German Army - a V1 - and damaged. It was later demolished and is now the location of Hornsey Fire Station. There must be joke about a baptism of fire in there somewhere. I remember Alexandra Palace when it was the BBC broadcasting station.

I live in Stamford Hill so the Warehouse District is fairly close, as you've shown lots of interesting old buildings still there. I think you passed the New River Sudios on Eade Road, great little cafe and music events place!
I've been to a couple of music events at Ally Pally, nice venue. I think they have opened up the old Theatre now as well.
