Most epoxy primers aren’t designed to be sanded like this.
After stripping this hood to bare metal with a rotary polisher and 80-grit, we laid down CRE 321 Series sandable epoxy primer as a barrier coat. Once properly cured and prepped, we could do our bodywork right over it, then seal it again with primer before moving toward paint.
That was the process we used for years: bare metal → CRE 321 epoxy barrier → bodywork → primer → blocking → paint.
But we’re changing the process on our newer restorations.
We’re testing a super high-build primer that can fill substantially deeper imperfections, allowing us to do far less hand-spread body filler and instead build, block, spot-repair, spot-prime, and move toward paint.
The goal? Straighter panels, better surface quality, and dramatically less hand-applied filler work.
This is an older video showing the CRE 321 process. The new high-build primer process is coming soon.
