My two cents, pre-pandemic, I visited Pulau Tekong with my son as he stated his first-day of NS. I met the Commander, actually two Commanders, one was going out and the other coming in. Our talk turned to whether NS was becoming "Too Easy", with me telling them that it was. One of them told me that if they tried to press any harder, the NS mums and MPs would be jumping on them, and he wasn't joking either. The other basically admitted that training was not the same as it was in their time.

Encik Kumar! So glad I went through Infantry Pro Term with him as our PWO/PC in another company (M Coy) ...

The part of the Charlie Mike after the completion of the last mission is a deal breaker for some 😂 You'll can see people breaking down

In my BMT days in 1993, one of my sergeant looks like Fido Dido, a comical character popular during that era. He is skinny and always carrying a novel, has a cute face and everyone didn’t see him as being a tough guy, but man was he the worst sadist in the company. Whenever he started talking we were all anticipating that it will be a hard day.

Back then, SCS was called SISPEC (School of Infantry Specialists), at Pasir Laba Camp. Remembered fast marching all the way up Elephant Hill (steep af) to finally receive CPL rank at the end of BSLC (Basic Section Leader Course). Good times

I was in National Service in 1980. I disliked NS - the army food was sub-standard, the training was very tough and they punished you over the slightest mistakes. Today, I am 63 years old and I am grateful that I finished my NS. It was in NS that I learned who my friends are in times of need, that you have only one Singapore to defend and you learned life skills - my fave army skill is "do first, complain later". For example, in the corporate world, I was tasked to do something which is not in my portfolio. I do first and later talk to my manager about my concerns.
