For over two centuries, America’s geography was its ultimate geographic hack. It provided the perfect rivers, endless fertile soil, and mountains of resources that built an unrivaled global superpower. But today, the very land that built the country is violently turning against it. From sinking cities in the East to drying rivers in the West, America's geography is breaking down. So how did the US use its geography to become a superpower and why is it all starting to fail today?

If you abuse waterways to no end they will fail

Who would have thought "taming" places like Florida and building cities like Pheonix, and Vegas in actual deserts was a bad idea.

These are moments where you realize that sustainability is not a hippie-dippie term, it's survival.

Why is every bad thing the size of New Jersey?

As someone who has fought wildfires in the West, the majority of massive wildfires are caused by 100 years of keeping fires as small as possible, 60 years of barely logging what wildfires would have previously cleared, and leaving millions of trees to grow closer than the earth can handle, which allows the beetles to kill them, causing even more fuel for the fire

Geoff somehow made river basins, aquifers, and permafrost feel like the plot of a thriller movie. Excellent video.

The Appalachian Mountain Range is also what gives Scotland its Highlands from when the continents were connected millions of years ago. They also form the Atlas Mountains in western Africa, the rugged western coast of Ireland and most of Norway. It's all the same mountain range split apart as the continents drifted.

Also, there are more Redwood trees in the UK than California.

"Like everybody else in the cocktail lounge, he was softening his brain with alcohol. This was a substance produced by a tiny creature called yeast. Yeast organisms ate sugar and excreted alcohol. They killed themselves by destroying their environment.

Kilgore Trout once wrote a short story which was a dialogue between two pieces of yeast. They were discussing the possible purposes of life as they ate sugar and suffocated in their own excrement. Because of their limited intelligence, they never came close to guessing that they were making champagne."

America's geography isn't failing; we are. As George Carlin said, the planet will be fine.

It's not the geography, it's the corporations that captured the county made solving any problems untenable. For example, they got water rights for nothing and cause incredible damage by wasting water by growing water-intensive plants in the desert.

The people who need to hear this message the most, will not hear it. They have their heads buried in the sand, seeing only dollar signs.

Something people don't tend to know is that a big problem with the fire prone areas is that they were planted with a ton of pine for wood which guzzles water as opposed to the slow growing redwoods that sip it. If we were to go through and clearcut all of that pine and leave it to grow redwoods , maybe burn the brush to activate redwood seeds, they would regrow with trees that wont steal all the water needed to prevent wildfires.

The desert was never able to support the vast amounts of people who now live there. The natural river system cannot support them.

You forgot about beavers. We killed them all in the early 1800's. Water tables and geography is still decimated from what we had.
