Obesity, diabetes, addiction… For several years now, sugar has become public enemy number one, the culprit behind all the diseases linked to our lifestyles. Yet, despite the criticism and numerous scientific studies, this ingredient remains a major component of our diet and continues to make us just as addicted.

Despite the grand promises, the industry doesn't seem ready to turn away from this raw material, long considered the miracle ingredient. As a result, 74% of the ultra-processed products we consume still contain impressive amounts of sugar. Why such a deluge of white powder on our plates?

The food industry is never short of solutions, with no fewer than 56 different types of sugar at its disposal. The vast majority of these are artificial sweeteners. One of them, high-fructose corn syrup, made from corn, has become ubiquitous in processed foods. It is accused of being the cause of a new epidemic: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Two million French men and women are estimated to be affected by this chronic condition.

While white sugar is under scrutiny, new alternatives such as agave syrup and coconut blossom sugar are gaining popularity. Can these artificial sweeteners help with weight loss? Are they truly safe for our health?
