The WILD Story Of How Oktoberfest Almost Killed Me

In 2015, I had a day off in Munich while on tour, and me and a bunch of roadies decided to go to the original Oktoberfest... This turned out to be one of the most insane days I've ever had on tour in my life, and it could have easily become me becoming a homeless crazy person on the streets of Munich forever.

Ringelpiez mit Anfassen (Ringelpiez with touching) is an old saying for a group of people meeting, dancing to music and having fun. The addition "with touching" means that the dancers touch each others hands or backs while dancing. Up until then it was common that everybody dances and moves by themselves and no touching of other people was involved. Nowadays this saying is sometimes used to describe a party where it is encouraged that people sometimes "disappear" to do grown up stuff. So by yelling this in a room full of dudes standing next to each other peeing is kinda like "Okay, who's going to cross swords? Let's go!"

btw, a friend of mine was a raging alcoholic. He went sober after he experienced someone else being drunk af without being drunk himself. He just watched the drunk guy, asked a friend who was with him "Am I like this dude when I'm drunk" and the other friend said "No, worse. You once vomitted on a table and tried to put it back in your mouth". He was SO disgusted, that he stopped drinking for good. That was before phones with cameras...

I'm still of the opinion this format should be called "Tank Talk"

As the old saying goes “American beer is like making love in a boat. It’s fucking close to water” 😂

Because no good story starts with "I ate too much salad"

Tank, in case you don't know, by law every citizen of the Federal Republic is required to provide first aid. Anyone who doesn't do so, and is caught doing so, can face a hefty fine or even jail time for failing to provide first aid! So it wasn't luck—it was fate that you were in Germany to have this experience!

As someone from Munich, I can also recommend the sober Oktoberfest experience: Go there in the afternoon, Have a Maß Spezi and some good food, and then proceed to do Autoscooter and ferris wheel rides, talk to the most random people (as you know by now, that's part of the fun), eat sweets and watch other people be either dumb, hilarious, or both 😊

Good to see you back Tank. Hope you’re feeling ok now. Sorry about your loss.

The good old Frischluft-Watschn has hit everyone before :)

I think the funniest thing about Oktoberfest is that it is in September. ><

This really shows how dangerous it is to drink too much and specially if you end up alone, so much could have happened.

German beer can destroy unsuspecting Americans. I studied abroad there - and at this time I was sober for a 1 year (8 years coming up in June!), and I was with a bunch of 20 year old American business students. I'm up at 5:30 in the hotel restaurant eating breakfast when one of my classmates comes into the hotel looking awful. "Good morning Sam!" I say as he shuffles up to me, looks me dead in the eyes, and with beer-soaked breath simply states "I woke up on the sidewalk."

On a previous trip I woke up with my battle-vest pockets completely full of dried sausage.

"Nothing good ever happens after 5pm" is not the worst rule to live by ^^

As a Munich local, another explanation for your audio engineer being so screwed up when he came back could just be that he slipped or fell on an escalator. Thesye things destroy you and everything in your pockets with these interlocking teeth on the stairs. At least none of you became one of the guys riding the trains with the people going to work/university the next morning covered in all bodily fluids imaginable, or even worse, on the infamous Kotzhügel, so you did well.

Talking about the learning to love sauerkraut part, a cool story time idea might be your experiences with food on the road. Any other food you learned to love from being on the road, any sketchy like “this place looks suspicious” that turned out to be delicious, any “never going to eat again” places or foods?
