In full scale historical symmetry, this song was the first and last video ever aired on MTV.

They reunited in like 2002 and performed this live. Even got the original backup singers. You've gotta watch that.

The earliest MTV videos were low budget, and that's what makes them endearing in retrospect.

The song almost makes me cry because it's lamenting the loss of cultural musical value that not only do we not appreciate it anymore for the most part but we don't even remember it was there

In 1981, I sat in front of my cousin's TV, watching the fuzz of the channel in anticipation. Then MTV sprung to life. Music videos, 24/7. This was the first video ever played there. And the rest is history. What a great time to be alive!

A great reaction and analysis by you, Aileen. Buggles was the brain child of music producer Trevor Horn who was responsible for producing a lot of '80s and '90s artists and bands, such as: ABC, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Pet Shop Boys, The Art of Noise, Mike Oldfield, Yes, Grace Jones, Malcolm McLaren, Seal, t.A.T.u., Belle and Sebastian, LeAnn Rimes, etc. He also founded the record label 'ZTT Records'. He's known as the man who invented the '80s.

Fun Fact: When MTV officially stopped playing music videos, this became the LAST video played on the channel.

The first video played and the last one played. MTV full circle!

They called it, didn't they?

1:28 They took the credit for your second symphony, rewritten by machine on new technology....

This is one of those RARE pop songs that when you get older and become a musician and really listen to it you go "oh. Oh I thought this was just a fun song. This has killer parts and it's super smart and interesting". And that's why it's one of my favorite radio friendly pop songs of all time.

The first and the last, lived to see both live.

@robertcampopiano6001 3 months ago

Hans Zimmer played keyboard on this.

And now computers have killed the Video stars.

"You were the first one, You were the last one" hits kinda different when you realise this was the first and last song played on MTV......

@tomfisher9191 3 months ago

The fact that this song and video were historic (first one ever on MTV) lends even greater appreciation of how really good this is.

@3DJapan 3 months ago

Gotta love the irony of making this the first video on MTV. They were clearly saying something.

There's a reason singer Trevor Horn joined the prog rock bans Yes for a while and even after leaving produced a lot of music with them. He's super talented.

He also produced t.A.T.u's iconic All The Things She Said.
