First time I've heard of the soap trick, very useful.

Hi Larry, good video of painting rails. I made myself a rubbing block by attaching two 1” square felt pads to a piece of timber. I then spray ipa on each pad and then wipe it along the rail which removes or softens the paint on top of the rail. I usually only paint about 2 to 3ft at a time before I remove the paint. All the best from Down Under.

A little Vaseline on a q-tip on the top of the rails also works very well. It also gives you a little more time to clean it off. Great tips and vid!

The Krylon Camo paint is perfect for painting track, but as you noted it's best to spray in smaller sections and immediately clean it with a clean paper towel before it dries -- no pre-treatment needed.

I used spraypaint for rails on my first N scale layout, but on the addition I ended up using tamiya acrylic paint through an airbrush thinned with IPA. It goes on very thin, so you need to do it in a couple coats, but you don't run into the problems of it acting as a glue. The main drawback is that you need to have a long enough cord or pipe for the airbrush and not spill any paint from your airbrush if you've got an open top reservoir.

With the airbrush I set my points midway with my Bullfrog point machines and get an even coat everywhere and it works great. I definitely didnt' want to bother with hand painting later.

This isn't a correction but sharing something that I did and something that works well.

One thing I want to do is look at really weathered wood for ties like I see on a branch line near my home. They're almost gray wood, being so old.

Hi Larry, nice quick & easy track weathering procedure there!
I would stay away from the Vaseline tho, in favor of the soap pre coat - or better yet, treat the track with no-ox or similar first...

And I'd avoid any abrasive rubbers - even lightly impregnated, they're still scratching the rails to some degree... As a next-up if the cork isn't removing stubborn areas, you might try a block of wood.

Krylon is a great paint. It has a fine spray compared to other paints. Also, that camo paint is I believe a primer,that's why it sticks so well. It's great paint. Your soap idea is something, so is no- ox though I've never used them for this but comon sense  tells me it should work fine.

Nice video/rail weathering tutorial! I watched a video awhile back (sorry don't remember author or would credit them), they used petroleum jelly over the tops of all rails, easy clean up even after a period of time. Like any other method,  will have some touch-ups (example - blob of petroleum jelly spreading over side rail). Easy enough. I enjoy this method to date. Did a couple cases of flex over the winter. Again, Not sure a great method, or best but seemed to work. Great tutorial!

Hi. You are using an excellent paint that I have used over and over again for years. One trick I learned is to use a small piece of scrap wood and run it over the top of the rails without any prep and while the paint is still somewhat wet it will come right off and soak into the wood. You can then use other pieces of wood or just move the piece you have around a bit and keep at it. Very simple way to clean the paint off the track. Thank you for your wonderful programs.

Excellent and timely video as I am just starting the track painting, weathering and detailing portion of my switching layout.
I've always been a craftsman structure builder and a military modeler but plans for the new layout, require a good number lot of plastic structure kits, mostly Cornerstone. Hoping you decide to move forward with a video(s) on building a plastic Cornerstone kit as you said there was a possibility, and it would be most helpful.  
For my current small layout, I've followed all your construction and wiring videos plus your emails to the Tee and all is proceeding smoothly for me.

New track cleaning news, we no longer use a 'Brightboy' because it scratches the surface of the rail and will get dirty easily and frequently. Masonite is better. Just an fyi.

I;m a no ox contact cleaner, lover. I put a thin amount on the top of all rails including the sections I taped over. Paint, I can take my time cleaning the rails as the paint does not bond to it. And I am now down, no tape or paint residue and my locomotives run much better to boot.

I used the rough side of  a piece of masonite before the paint was real dry. Worked great. I always clean my rails with this anytime it needs cleaning. Worst case the brightboy works great but need to use it gently.
