On Christmas Eve 1991, 23-year-old Dana Ireland was struck by a vehicle while cycling through Puna on Hawaii's Big Island. She was abducted, assaulted, and left to die on a remote fishing trail. She died at Hilo Medical Center just after midnight on Christmas Day.

Three men were convicted. The DNA excluded all of them.

Frank Pauline Jr. was convicted in 1999 and died in prison in 2015. Ian Schweitzer was convicted in 2000 and spent nearly 25 years behind bars. His younger brother Shawn, just 16 at the time of the crime, was pressured into a guilty plea after watching Ian get sentenced to life.

The entire case was built on jailhouse-informant testimony from men who received reduced sentences for cooperating. The lead witness recanted his confession three years before trial. Prosecutors used his original statements anyway. The DNA from the crime scene, labeled "Unknown Male #1," pointed to someone else from the very beginning.

In January 2023, the Hawaii Innocence Project secured Ian Schweitzer's exoneration after advanced DNA testing and forensic analysis demolished every piece of evidence used to convict him. Shawn's conviction was vacated months later.

Then, in 2024, forensic genetic genealogy finally put a name to Unknown Male #1: Albert Lauro Jr., a 57-year-old man who had lived two miles from the crime scene for over three decades. When police collected his DNA on July 19, 2024, they let him walk out of the station. Four days later, he was found dead by suicide. He was never arrested. Never charged.

This documentary covers the full story: Dana Ireland's life, the botched investigation, the wrongful convictions, the exonerations, the genetic genealogy breakthrough, and the fallout that followed. Three innocent men paid for a crime committed by someone who never spent a day in jail.

Dana's parents both died without knowing who killed their daughter.

The Schweitzer brothers are still fighting for compensation and accountability.

The case remains officially open.
