just remember, it could be worse, They could have converted the People Mover into a haphazardly designed "roller coaster" and realize almost immediately that it rips the track apart and is a maintenance nightmare and shut it down in 5 years with no plans to ever open it ever again but keep it standing to remind guests what was once there. Disney wouldn't REALLY do that would they (looks west)?
5:32 can confirm this but wont elaborate further, they havent TOUCHED that place ever since closing. The only thing they use it for is employees to get around the park quicker and for a breakroom. I doubt theyll gut that place in the next decade 😂
The Alien Encounter was one of the best attractions I ever experienced at Disney. I saw adults cry from fear. So good! I wish they would bring it back.
I used to work in Tomorrowland (mostly at Space Mountain) during the turn of the millennium when it went from eXterror to Stitch and when Buzz Lightyear was put in etc. I still have friends that work there today. Pretty sure ALL of the asbestos was abated when Eisner remodeled Tomorrowland. That space still gets used for staging for special events etc. I want to know the source that says it's still an issue. Not ONCE have I heard there were any hidden pockets of the stuff, though that doesn't mean there isn't. It's just that there has been so many opportunities to remove it and the law suit, legal, and public image problems from not removing asbestos is not how Disney plays. They like money too much. I think that no one has come up with a replacement that would be worth it financially more than having the available space for whatever until they do. If they did, asbestos wouldn't stop them. Disney has never really known what to do with Tomorrowland. Speedway STILL ISN'T electrified and so on. (BTW the vast majority of cast members ABSOLUTELY HATED working Speedway (but enjoyed eXterror (which adults came out crying and we basically didn't allow kids in) and to a lessor extent Stitch, (but kids loved it.)
Asbestos isn't that big of a deal. They removed it from my high school while the school while the building was still in-use. The real issue is: Disney's cheap and has no real imagineers left. Quality people like Tony Baxter and Marty Sklar no longer exist at Disney.
I remember riding ExtraTerrorestrial back when I was in middle school, and while it was rather scary for 12 year old me, I was really disappointed when it switched to Stitch. Riding the overhauled version, it was obvious that they went way too far in the other direction trying to make it less scary.
They had the perfect opportunity to deal with this when the parks were closed due to COVID. Problem is that they would not only be dealing with the asbestos but COVID as well. Asbestos is nasty stuff. Had a flood in our home and when the renos were being done they found it in the flooring. The house looked like a zombie apocolypse for 3 weeks.
Welcome to the TVA. I feel like there is a way to make that work in the space. Fits the land theme and look so well. Walk through and see the office area, R&D, the Time Line, or maybe a show related to it could work.
It was originally Mission to Mars, which is the only version where the restraints made sense (added to the illusion of blasting off in a rocket.) The XS tech renovation was part of the mid-nineties rethink of Tomorrowland. Truly frightening attraction. Stitch was really dumb and unpopular, which is why it closed. They can’t pull it out because of the asbestos - same situation with Carousel of Progress and Space Mountain - the best they can do is retrofit it with the same ride systems in refurbished condition.
