17 years later and The Dark Knight is still one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. Even the stuck up snobs at the Academy recognized how amazing it was by not only giving it 2 Oscars for Best Sound and Best Supporting Actor (which Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker still stands as the best and most faithful live action depiction of the character), but it also forced the Academy to expand their list of nominees for Best Picture from 5 to 10, meaning they retroactively regretted not nominating it for Best Picture.

What a lot of people forget and don't notice is when the Joker burns that mountain of money the accountant is still on top and gets burned with the money.

Aaron Eckhart too this day does not get enough credit for his heartbreaking and Shakespearean portrayal of Harvey Dent/Two-Face. He actually took inspiration for the character from RFK, even getting his haircut in the same style.

Before this film came out, so many people were complaining about the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker, as they couldn't believe that Ledger, with his track record of playing leads in rom-coms, would have the edge needed to play a good Joker.
They ate their words when the film released, for sure...

Two thirds of this movie are a constant climax. It's insane.

Another fun fact: the "normal" car Bruce drives is a Lamborghini Murcielago, which means "bat". Very subtle.

The Joker keeps changing the story about his scars as a reference to the comics story Batman: The Killing Joke. In it, Joker provides a tragic and detailed backstory for himself. But at the end of it, he recants his story, claiming that he truly doesn't remember how he became The Joker and says, "If I'm going to have an origin story, I prefer it to be multiple choice."

The Killing Joke was a major influence on the themes of this movie, as it involves The Joker committing heinous acts in an effort to push people to compromise their morals and prove that all it takes is "one bad day" to turn anyone into someone like him and Batman.

Ledger's Joker is iconic and terrifying. Still the best depiction of Joker bar none IMO.

RIP Heath.

To play such a complex character as the Joker at such a young age. Heath Ledger was a genius!!!

I love how Joker plays everyone, even his origin story varies depending on the victim. He uses "daddy issues" against a mob boss, a tragic love story against Dent's love interest, and he was about to say something about doing it himself to the Batman who obviously has... issues. BTW look at his eyes shifting around when he's telling the stories, he's probably making stuff up on the fly. What a legendary performance.

Whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you stranger. Great line.

Deebo's character arc is the real story. From Compton bullly to convicted felon to Gotham ferry boat savior.

I was one of those people who was skeptical about Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker. Then I saw the movie and was simultaneously wowed and heartbroken. It really drove home what a tremendously gifted actor he was.

This movie is perfect. A masterclass in filmmaking. Heath Ledger absolutely earned his Oscar for this role. His death was a tragic loss to cinema. He had so much more to give to the world.

The entire theater made some kind of involuntary noise at the Disappearing Pencil Trick.

One of my FAVORITE little hidden bits of this movie is during the scene at the hospital between the Joker and Two Face. At the climax of his monologue, when the Joker is holding the revolver to his head, he's actually keeping his thumb on the hammer of the firearm. Because he's doing that, even if Two Face pulls the trigger, the gun won't go off. He was ALWAYS in control, as much as he could be. It's a fascinating little character moment that could be interpreted in a million ways and suggests so much about how he approaches his goals. He is, as much as he accuses everyone else, a hypocrite. His true obsession was control, and that little moment is what really seals it.

The Dark Knight is an amazing movie. Christian Bale and Heath Ledger were made for Batman and the Joker. Rest in peace Heath Ledger. Thank you for being part of The Dark Knight.
