History Calling

Discover the LEGENDARY RULERS of Scotland before the Union of the Crowns; every Scottish king and queen from Kenneth MacAlpin to James VI, in 750 years of royal power, war, and intrigue.

This Scottish royal history documentary from History Calling showcases the complete history of Scottish monarchs from 848 to 1625 (the Union of the Crowns had occurred in 1603 when James VI became James I of England). It explores the reigns of every king and queen to sit on the throne of Scotland, including the famous, the forgotten, and the controversial. You’ll hear about the lives and legacies of Scotland’s most iconic rulers like Macbeth, the real king behind Shakespeare’s legend, Margaret, Maid of Norway, whose tragic death sparked a succession crisis, James IV whose marriage to Margaret Tudor set the scene for the ultimate joining of the English and Scottish crowns, the tragic Mary, Queen of Scots and her son James VI. You’ll also uncover the stories of lesser-known rulers who shaped Scotland through war, alliance, betrayal, and political intrigue.

Each monarch’s biography includes key facts: birth and death dates (where known), years of reign, major events, battles, successions, and legacies. Whether they ruled for decades or mere months, every Scottish king and queen left their mark on the Kingdom of Alba and later the Kingdom of Scotland.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a student, or just curious about the real lives behind the legends, this video offers a detailed and engaging journey through one of Europe’s most fascinating royal lineages.

This video is perfect for history lovers, students, researchers, and anyone curious about the royal bloodline of Scotland. Explore how the Scottish crown evolved from the early medieval period to the dawn of the British monarchy.

"Duked it out for the throne" was a pun worth doffing my cap to.

Who needs a reality tv drama when you have history.

It never ceases to amaze me that, given how short their reigns and how violent their deaths, anyone in the early list of Scottish kings actually wanted to be king. I guess one always feels that somehow things will go differently. But it rarely does.

No, no, no - you are the superstar for doing all the reaearch and editing to put this video together. Absolutely fantastic work, thank you for helping me learn about a subject I really should know much more about. Thank you. 🎉

It ain't much, HC, but I couldn't let this grand effort pass without a tip. An epic overview which has sparked enough curiosity in me to start my own digging into Scotland's history. From what little I've read, Robert the Bruce seems a very complex man and I've already done some online reading about him. Well done, HC! Happy holidays. 🙏🏼

Thank you for this documentary. I’m a Scot. Sadly, we never learnt anything about Scottish history at school when I was young, which angers me. My daughter actually picked Scottish studies at high school this year, so at least Scottish people now have an option to learn about their own history at school.

Superstar. That was magnificent! Many thanks. Queen Margret of Denmark is still remembered nowadays. She is attributed in giving the Scots culture or writing. There are many institutions name after her. The Portrait Gallery's depictions of our monarchs is the highlight of any visit. The light at different times of the day is quite something and varies throughout the year.

YOU are the superstar!! There’s a reason HC is my favorite YouTube channel, history or otherwise - no one is doing it like you!!

I know I’m going to enjoy listening to this several times!
Your voice is similar to my favorite college professor, she hailed from Edinburgh and has such a gentle voice and it was a joy to attend her lectures. I get all the enjoyment of attending a lecture without having to sit in an uncomfortable chair. But seriously I really appreciate what you do❤

If we're superstars for finishing the video, you must be a supernova for making it! That was incredible, and the amount of information is staggering- this is definitely one to rewatch a few times!

You are the superstar, HC! Thank you for another fabulous video! Being a 1/4 Scottish, I had no idea the history of Scotland was so complex! But as you say all the time, keep learning! 😁
