As ordinary as I am, in this video I’m only offering my most basic understanding of China’s political system. I’m not giving any deep political insight — because I have NONE! As a language teacher, my head is full of stories and fun little language nuances, and nothing else.

So my goal, in all my videos, is simply to recreate a natural language environment for you, so you can pick up new words and learn them in meaningful context.

I’m a Westerner who’s more open to political diversity than ever. I don’t think there’s a single perfect political system. In my view, voting in Western democracies has almost lost its meaning, as politicians rarely act in the best interest of everyone, often serving the agendas of lobbyists, the wealthy, or even the interests of other countries. I believe each nation should adopt the system that works best for its own circumstances. China is a massive country with over a billion people and a history and culture very different from many Western nations, so it’s not clear to me that Western-style democracy would even be suitable there. So, you’ve come up with a unique system that seems to work for you, at least for now given your current stage of development. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Thanks again zhu zi. I’ve studied and read politics of all sorts for many years. You’ve managed to explain the Chinese system in the most simple yet comprehensive way I’ve ever read while keeping it factual but non controversial. This is a genuinely impressive achievement.

The video contains a lot of the vocab I really want to learn but reminds me that even hsk 5 is relatively simple language, probably at about late primary school level.

For me the problem with most western democracy is its only a little bit democratic. People get one vote every few years then lobbyists who represent mostly businesses get the ear of politicians tge other 99% of the time. Also elections are strongly influenced by local media which mostly represents business though cleverly disguised as promoting jobs and economic growth etc. I’m sure you know about this where you live. Then there’s the restrictive actual electoral systems. The US and UK are among the worst. Both have first past the post for legislature. The US has the farcical electoral college and no run off elections for President.
