Why Even The SAS Need Britain's Most Secret Regiment

Phil Campion Unfiltered

Most people have never heard of the Special Reconnaissance Regiment.

That isn't an accident.

The SRR is one of Britain's most secretive military units, operating quietly behind the scenes on some of the country's most sensitive missions.

Unlike the SAS or SBS, the Special Reconnaissance Regiment rarely makes headlines. Its role isn't direct action, it's gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance, and providing the critical information that allows other units to succeed.

In this episode of Tactical Truth, former UK Special Forces operator Phil Campion explains what the SRR actually does, why it was created, and why it remains one of the least understood capabilities within UK Special Forces.

Phil explores:

• What the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR) really does
• Why the SRR was created
• How it supports UK Special Forces operations
• The difference between the SRR, SAS and SBS
• Why intelligence and surveillance win modern conflicts
• The challenges of operating without recognition
• Why the public rarely hears about SRR operations

Sometimes the most important missions are the ones you'll never know happened.

I love the fact that someone as capable and respected as Phil doesn't big up what he did, but gives credit to the team. Once again proves that he is a true professional. Speaks volumes to the character of what a special forces operator truly is. No beating of the chest, but thoughtful and patient. Proves why UK SF of whichever unit are the best. Thank you.

The MK1 Eyeball has had thousands of years in R&D

Great video Phil! I remember listening to an interview about two years ago on Radio Four with a very recently retired British diplomat. He basically said, without expressly saying (if you get my meaning), that SRR is the the Regiment that works very closely with the Home Office and Foreign Office and therefore MI5 and MI6. They are the military ‘Grey men’. You wouldn’t look at them twice. They go in and out unnoticed. The one quote I really remember from his interview was “Historically the SAS like to burst in and out of foreign embassies, the SRR prefer to sneak.” Great episode mate and keep up the good work 👍

A lot of people who don’t know what they’re talking about here , or just seemingly making things up… here’s the FACTS.
The SRR was originally formed as a tier 2 support unit alongside and at the same time as the SFC role. What was quickly realised after a few years of its existence was that the demand for their skill set was FAR greater than was originally deemed. Constantly deployed ALONE as their own entity and at reach in hostile environments/territories with no assets to come and save them, all whilst operating covertly. And as of 2019 (whether people like or not) the SRR have been officially recognised as tier 1 uksf… If you are currently serving in the forces and decided to apply for selection via the MOD site, they are literally placed under the tier 1 heading and there is page after page of info referring to them as such. These days they also fall under the same pay scale as an SBS/SAS operator whereas SFC’s , SFM’s (tier 2 ‘support’ units) do not. It’s not even up for debate anymore.

Hi Phil,

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your service to our amazing country and its citizens!

It’s disappointing how the armed forces are being treated in recent times.

I was raised to have the utmost respect to all branches of the services. If not for a chronic medical condition in my early teens I would have joined up myself, always dreamed of joining 40 commando, only live just down the road from Norton Manor Camp!

Hey ho, such is life. All the best mate and keep up the good work.

A simple thought springs to mind: Patience is a virtue. We all know it. A captivating video, Phil - it spoke to me. Thanks. Mark

I remember the casualty from SRR who we found over Chichester about 10 years back. You were with us that day Phil.

Terrifying what goes on behind the scenes to keep us safe! Thanks to anyone and everyone that has served or is serving. I shall raise a glass or two.

SR are a fine bunch of fellers. They're not just sneaky-peeks. They have their own gruelling selection process and are more than capable of getting a bit punchy if they need to.

Thanks for a very interesting and informative description of this military unit and its overall role.

Also had a mate from Det and I have nothing but respect and awe for what he and his brothers do for our security. Thank you all for the sacrifices you've made!!!

Quite a lot of 22 and sbs blokes go to the SRR continuation training, a few older blokes used to say that srr is what the sas used to be before GWOT

Nice to hear the background to some of these operations.

@brocklanders6008 2 months ago

SRR are definitely classed as a Tier 1 unit alongside SAS and SBS its in the public record.

I love the story he tells about being in the supermarket and his beeper goes off and he sprints back to base, but it's because the padre wants a greenhouse put up, but you need to listen to him and his description of the yomp back, so funny.

The time spent in recce is seldom wasted. That was my favourite tasking in the CDN Infantry. We patrolled in 4 man teams, light, without a round in the chamber. Long, 20+ km traverses arriving within 100m of the target. Pre-GPS. Pace and compass baby! 😘

Class Phil, no BS just and Respect for the other units.

I spent over 10 years in operation units in the NCA and SOCA. Doing surveillance operations. The way its dipited in films, with these dangly earpieces... 1 or 2 man follows... cars with operatives directly across the road from the targets. So far away from how its conducted.
I wouldn't go into the actual methodology on here, but the tactics are deliberate and highly trained. You could be under surveillance for a week and be checking whos following you in all that time and you'd be none the wiser.
I'm actually surprised Hollywood wouldnt portray it more accurately as its very slick and the exact thing that would appeal to people watching
