For nearly two weeks, student protests have been escalating across the country. At the heart of their demands are the lack of educational resources and the dilapidated state of schools, as well as the discrimination between suburban and city-center high schools. The government's response has been marked by violence: brutal police interventions, mass arrests, instructions to prosecutors to take a hard line, and reprimands to parents. In this interview, criminal defense lawyer Raphaël Kempf analyzes this particularly heavy-handed penal policy and denounces the instrumentalization of the justice system for the purpose of maintaining public order.
