I love that in a world of honeycomb structured aluminum and carbon fiber, we still wrap rockets in cork. It's even more amazing when you know that the wine industry has been going through a bit of a crisis over the last decade surrounding dwindling supplies of cork over the last 15 years.

Wow. What a thorough breakdown. I'm glad you didn't miss the mundane stuff like overhead.

Bro you missed by far the most important point in your cost breakdown:

How many times each rocket can fly.

You have to amortize the initial cost of building the rocket over the number of launches.

So that $40mm goes up in smoke if it fails to land, but if it flies 10 times, then the capex is only $4/launch.

Has massive implications on spacex operating costs and profitability.

Those $1 million reusable SpaceX engines are still a bit cheaper than the ones that NASA pays $127 million for each disposable one.

the video a lot of us we needed, i was surprised by the cost of liquid oxigen, i thought it was complex and expensive to produce but it is the complete opposite 😱

The fastest booster turnaround time isn't 27 days, it's 9. They also don't static fire boosters before reusing them anymore.

You know, seeing the Falcon 9 on a truck and with actual humans near it. It's huge. I thought it wasn't that tall honestly.

@michaels2792 1 year ago

"Liquid oxygen has been used in every rocket launch since the 1960s" is not true. Dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) is used as oxidiser for some rockets (see Proton)

Falcon 9 launched 3 astronauts into orbit today. Doesn’t even register in the news anymore

A little behind the times with the fairing catch ships, they have been discontinued for probably a couple of years because the catch rate was not good. Now they just fish them out of the water, referb and go again.

12:35 In addition to the propellants proper (the RP-1 and the liquid oxygen), there is also Helium gas for pressurizing the tanks and for starting and restarting the engines on the ground and in flight. The prices of helium have changed wildly over the years, but a few years ago it was reported that the cost of helium for one launch was greater than the cost of LOX.

@aultraman 1 year ago

Wow, falcon 9 is roughly 1/3 of the price of a F-35. It's not an apple to apple comparison, but it's an interesting comparison.

Love this detail and the different views and ideas to consider.
Great content.

Very nicely done! Lot's of interesting information brought together in a clean format.

This has been one of my favorite videos you’ve ever produced! So much detail and information; I imagine it took a lot of work. Thank you!!

Mind officially blown! 🤯 Never knew launching a Falcon 9 was such a wild (and expensive!) ride across America. That drone ship landing is pure sci-fi. Awesome breakdown! 👍🚀
