You are so right on with everything you discussed. So many great points, but getting the people to want to accept this is always a challenge. You have been a name in this hobby for so long, and I personally want to thank you. Maybe someday we can be on an A main drivers stand together. Take care, and there is no controversy that I see!
I agree with nearly all of your thoughts and ideas. You said what most of us are thinking. I think the biggest challenge is getting tracks and shop openers to settle on classes and rules. And enforce them. Everyone right now wants an RTR but in 6 months they all want to go faster and open the rules.......which in turn causes people to quit and the surge in entries, enthusiasm and fun is then lost.
Good points Matt. "Nearby RTR" is what got me into dirt oval RC with a Slash Super Stock. Now I run kit built 13.5 Sprint and Late Model, both of which have similar RTR models. In my area, the kit car classes were well established by the time the RTR cars became available, but we are making classes for them when enough show up. RTR cars seem to have come far enough that they are not just a gateway car, but something that can be raced for years. Racing etiquette, passing skills and so on are all easier to learn at the speeds the RTRs go. Foam tires... I'm only 3 years into the sport so I have never seen one. But running 13.5 my rubber tire expense isn't too high as I can get quite a bit of life out of them. Anyway, great video and I look forward to more!
I agree with everything said. Keep it loose, RTR, foam tires, and be good to the new racers.
I think the rookie classes are the hobby side of RC car racing, while the “Sport” side, for lack of a better term, is more about the purpose-built classes.
But the most important points in this video, IMO, are affordability and helping drivers who are new to the hobby.
Very well said Matt.Especially the drivers etiquette portion of the video I’ve been trying and trying to get that through a lot of guys heads here at our local track. It’s getting better. I think it’s finally starting to sink in..
With each key point you brought up, I can first hand play back things I’ve seen on the race track. Direct examples of the points you made! 100% agree with the tire deal and I’d love to see loose dirt make a come back.
Liked, subscribed and shared. We've had this conversation before...as a track promoter it was hard before when someone asked"how do i get started" I really had nothing good to tell them. Buy a kit and all parts and jump intonthe deep end, or buy a rtr slash and spend another couple hundred to convert it. Now,buy one of the rtr options...and race it... Buy a rtr losi, any of the 3, and just drop on the track and be able to race with dozens of other cars at all our local tracks with a locked in set of rules.
Then over time they can learn abiut race prep, driver etiquette and setup..while hopefully enjoying themselves enough to keep coming back, and then moving into the more expensive classes.
I have at least 4 locals that started with a losi or traxxas rtr and now own a purpose built sprint or lm.
Spot on. Great video. I am new to hobby. I purchased the Losi Sprint because I loved how it looked so much like a sprint car. Originally meant to be displayed in my office. Found local track, ran it and had so much fun. Now I have four Losi Sprints and two Losi Late Models. I have purchased spare parts, tools, high end chargers, etc. More stuff than I need but I enjoy it. Glad to help grow RC! My return is having fun, learning new skills and knowledge, and meeting new people. Worth it to me. If I didn’t discover the Losi cars I would not be posting this or even know who Murfdog is! Thanks for all you do!
Team Associated SR10 was my intro to RTR, and it was a stacked field. Fun to race and enough power to be really fun. It builds skills I used for later.
Great video !! I've been out of R / C racing for 25 ish yrs. Raced wood, carpet, asphalt, dirt - lunchbox pajeros to mod sprints and pancars. Decided to get back into it mid way thru the outdoor season started with mudboss then pajeros again lol got 3 losi nascars and a losi dirt latemodel. Love the fact of the affordable racing would love to get a mod sprintcar to run or a mod latemodel but older and married knocks that down lol
love the take! i just started about 2 months in dirt oval RTR and have already ventured into purpose built. We always want to go faster. Only issue I'm seeing and learning is the grey areas with tech and what's legal or not in RTR...
great ideas awesome video i was racing dirt oval back in mid 80's and carpet oval in the late 80's all on foam tires and it was a lot of work. as the tires get worn you could true them but then gearing comes into play. that is the only augment that i have every thing else i completely agree with. great spot on video. thanks matt
Is There a Place for RTR Racing in RC Dirt Oval Racing???
