The Transylvanian Saxons are a German-speaking minority who have lived in present-day Romania since the 12th century, particularly in the historical region of Transylvania (Romanian: Transilvania).
Their history begins with deliberate settlement by the Hungarian royal family. Around 1141, King Géza II of Hungary invited German settlers to what was then sparsely populated Transylvania. The colonists came primarily from western Central Europe: from the Moselle region, the Eifel, parts of Lorraine, Luxembourg, the Rhine and Sauerland regions, and Westphalia, as well as some from Bavaria, Thuringia, and Upper Saxony.
They were later collectively referred to as "Saxons" in historical records. The settlers came as free farmers, artisans, miners, merchants, and sometimes even as wealthy or noble families. They followed the call of the king, who promised them land, privileges, and protection. The settlements were intended to secure the eastern border of the Kingdom of Hungary against nomads such as the Cumans and later the Mongols.
As early as 1224, their rights were summarized in a famous charter – the Andreanum, also known as the Golden Charter. It was issued in 1224 by Andrew II. This document granted the settlers exceptionally extensive privileges: personal freedom, their own jurisdiction, self-government, the right to freely elect a priest, tax exemption from Hungarian nobles, and direct subordination to the crown.
The Andreanum is considered one of the earliest autonomous legal foundations for an ethnic group in Eastern Europe. The Saxons settled primarily in the so-called Königsboden (Royal Land) – an autonomously administered territory with cities such as Hermannstadt (Sibiu), Kronstadt (Brașov), Schäßburg (Sighișoara), Bistritz (Bistrița), Mediasch (Mediaș), Mühlbach (Sebeș), and others. Later, territories in the Burzenland and Nösnerland were added.

PS: Meine Eltern sind tatsächlich aus Siebenbürgen (Sibiu bzw. Mediasch) nach Deutschland gekommen und was in dem Video gesagt wurde, kann ich weitestgehend bestätigen.
