In August 2025 I hosted a group hiking trip with subscribers on the Walker's Haute Route, hut to hut from Chamonix, France, to Zermatt, Switzerland. Nine days over the Col de Balme, the Fenêtre d'Arpette, the Col de Prafleuri and the Col de Riedmatten, a night at Cabane de Moiry above the glacier, the Bella Tola and the Augstbordpass, finishing beneath the Matterhorn. About 79 miles on foot, with a few buses and lifts between town stops. This is the ambient version: natural sound from the trail, then a talk about the trip at the end. Hey Kraig! My twinbro Taran went with you guys to Switzerland. It was his first time going abroad, so getting there was all so new and full of challenges. To be honest, our family's been dealing with cancer, and it's been sucking a lot. But to see my bro go after this big trip despite it all was the most encouraging and beautiful thing I got to look forward to with him, and now I can watch it! I loved how much he laughed and goofed around with you guys. I bet group hikes take a lot of effort on your part, since it involves lots of people--and maybe it was initially a bit out of your comfort zone. But Kraig, it's so awesome. I love that you're doing that and it's so fun to watch! All these strangers from all over the world, just enjoying a hike together. Who knows what kind of people you'll meet, the friends you'll make, and the lives you'll impact just by opening up opportunities for a group hike? Someday, someone in a tough spot who forgot how to dream might just one day think, "I wonder what would happen if I applied for that group hike?" And cool memories like this happen. Anywho, don't mind me being a sap but just thought maybe you should hear it from someone: thanks for letting random people join you on your adventures. It's so very good for them (and you!)
