Ah yes. The Imperial Speed Bump.

Or the, “You must be at least this tall to ride “Plot Relevance”.

No matter how much we laugh at the P.D.F., they will always be the pebble that stops an avalanche and that's all the Emperor asks for.

The PDF may seem like irrelevant cannon fodder, but remember that they serve a vital function in the overarching narrative of 40k: a "You Must Be This Lethal To Get A Novel" sign.

“I said I needed the P.D.F., not a PDF! What on Terra am I supposed to do with a Data slate with the imperial guard’s uplifting primer on it?!!”-  A hive governor berating his personal administratum clerk while facing a surprise invasion.

*Vraks pdf holds off the Imperium for years - "Am I a joke to you?"

"In the news today, the PDF were stumped when a farm worker went on a rampage with a home made "Killdozer". Their stub guns unable to scratch its makeshift armoured plates."

“THE PDF DEPLOYS!”- song recorded being sung by the Randomian PDF, shortly before getting annihilated by orks

Only a fool underestimates the PDF, and only a moron overestimates the PDF. The last line of defense for any world in the Imperium, and the source of new Guardsmen for the Imperial Guard. These guys deserve more love, and some actual love at that and not simping for Tau booty.

Ah yes, the PDF, because when shit hits the fan, someone’s got to take the spray

Arch having insufficient contempt for the British is proof of his gentle and compassionate spirit

Administratum Drone: It occurs to me that our forces are spread impossibly thin defending countless worlds.
Munitorum Drone: Yes?
Administratum Drone: And the reason for that is that those worlds' PDF forces aren't adequately equipped to deal with outside threats.
Munitorum Drone: Yes?
Administratum Drone: So wouldn't it free up a massive number of troops if we simply raised the PDF forces across the Imperium to Guard standards?
Munitorum Drone: BLAM HERESY!!!!!!!!

Ah the PDF......the true cannon fodder of the imperium.

“How do I open PDF”

I have a homebrew feudal world where it's pretty much Orcs vs Humans, medieval era humans vs Feral orks.
Their tithe is those lucky knights or pikemen who are "uplifted" to join the war in the heavens against the enemy of the God Emperor.
...
Imagine being a footman and you're given a lasgun.

The Prospero Spireguard fought against the Space Wolves during that whole fustercluck and bought the Thousand Sons enough time to get organized.

The best PDF examples shown in the lore in my opinion was the Cadian interior guard and the Ultramar auxiliary forces.

It's a shame that the local guard reservists don't get covered much.

I know of one story where some PDF soldiers "acquired" Imperial Guard gear and weapons then proceeded to wreck shop with their knowledge of the terrain to locate enemy positions for artillery strikes and ambushes with the Guard's superior firepower.  Some of those PDFers ended up in the retinue of an Inquisitor for their initiative and flexibility. They died in the Inquisitor's book but hey for awhile they were living the dream

Planetary Defense Forces...quality may vary

Ahh the PDF; everything from substandard Guard Knockoffs to every man with a Bolter and Power armor, it all depends on the planet they're on...

I love Ultramar's pdf. Those guys can hold the line by themselves a good deal of the time. And hella loyal too.
