In 1929, archaeologists discovered the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit and the world found out that the Bible's world was a lot bigger and stranger than most people realized. In 2010, archaeologist Eli Shukron excavated a series of rock-cut chambers above the Gihon Spring in Jerusalem and found something that stopped people in their tracks: an altar platform, a drainage channel, an olive press, a standing stone, and a sealed favissa. The site dates to the 19th to 17th centuries BC. That's Abraham's century.

Genesis 14 tells us a priest-king named Melchizedek walked out of a city on a hill, offered Abraham bread and wine, and blessed him in the name of El Elyon, God Most High. Abraham gave him a tithe of everything. The writer of Hebrews says that moment matters more than most Christians realize.

Today we're putting Melchizedek in real time and real place -- the archaeology, the ancient Near Eastern context, and the thread that runs from a valley below Jerusalem all the way to the night someone else offered bread and wine in the same city and said this is my body, this is my blood.
