A British C8 Field Artillery Tractor and its 25-pounder have stopped on a narrow Normandy lane in August 1944. The sergeant has a map out, but rather than checking it himself, he’s stopped a local French farmer to ask for directions.
This 1/35 scale Normandy bocage diorama is built around that small moment — a British gun crew, a French farmer at the gate, and a dusty lane disappearing between the hedgerows.
For the terrain, I wanted to capture the distinctive look of the Normandy bocage: high earth banks, tangled hedgerows, exposed roots, branches and foliage, with a hard, dusty road worn smooth by passing vehicles. The hedges were built up using natural materials, printed leaves and scatter materials, with the road and banks painted and weathered to bring everything together.
The C8 and 25-pounder have also been loaded up with the sort of tarps, camouflage netting and field equipment you might expect to see on a working gun tractor.
This is the finished scene — and probably one of the most involved dioramas I've built so far.

This diorama has been a proper labour of love, from building the Normandy bocage and dusty lane to creating all the little plants and foliage.
But the bit I really wanted to capture was the moment at the gate — a British sergeant stopping to ask a French farmer for directions.
What do you think — does the scene tell the story I was aiming for? And what would you have added?
Thanks for watching and supporting Rusty Plastik! 👍
