The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti in the Caribbean and was the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and soon became a Spanish colony. The capital, Santo Domingo, is the oldest continuously inhabited European city in the New World. Over the centuries, the country experienced colonization by Spain and brief occupations by France and Haiti. It gained independence from Haiti in 1844, led by Juan Pablo Duarte and other revolutionaries.
