How Modern Torpedoes Actually Work | Mk-48

This is a modern torpedo, and beneath its skin lies an incredible feat of engineering divided into several specialized sections.

Right at the nose is the guidance section, packed with advanced sonar arrays.

Instead of just blind thrust, it sends acoustic pulses across the ocean, processing the return echoes to track and lock onto enemy submarines.

But Sailors inside the submarine can steer the weapon manually through an ultra-thin wire link, fine-tuning its trajectory toward the exact target before detonating its high-explosive warhead right beneath the hull.

But Russian torpedoes,

however, often rely on a completely different tactic.

Rather than pinging through the water column, they use upward-pointing sensors to detect the turbulence and micro-bubbles left behind by a ship's wake making them almost impossible to decoy.

Even deadlier are air-dropped torpedoes.

Deployed by maritime patrol aircraft and slowed by parachutes on entry, they activate immediately to circle and hunt detected targets below.

Historically, surface warships like destroyers and aircraft carriers were sitting ducks for torpedo strikes.

To flip the script, navies developed standoff rocket- and gas-launched torpedo systems, turning surface ships into deadly submarine hunters.

And to counter American naval supremacy?

Russia went to the extreme, developing massive, nuclear-powered mega-torpedoes weapons nearly thirty times the size of a standard lightweight torpedo.
