Coffee and cake is a thing, but it's not exclusive to Sunday.
It's when you have family or friends at your place at afternoon.

I can tell you where the no humour thing comes from: Germans only laugh when something is funny, not to make someone feel good about a bad joke. So basically, everyone who interacted with Germans and said „Ugh, those Germans! No humour!“ is outing themselves as being not funny.

We Germans take our fun very seriously.

The reason Americans feel like people are staring at them is that they often speak very loudly, which startles and disturbs those around them.

I'm British, I live in Germany (for 46 years) and have a lot of friends and colleagues and believe me, they are very, very funny

Here in Germany you say it in advance: „Hey, perhaps I come half‘n hour later. Ok?“ So nobody have to watch the street for someone coming or not.

Germany here. Born in the post-war era, I grew up knowing that Sunday was invariably "family day." An essential part of this tradition was coffee and cake—the cake itself was freshly baked right after breakfast. Furthermore, "coffee time" always took place punctually at 4:00 PM; once a month, we would visit other family members on a Sunday at precisely that hour. If the weather was just about fine, a family walk was in order after lunch—preferably to a destination that had a story behind it. Along the way, we were taught about the birds, trees, clowds, stones or wildflowers growing at the roadside... For us children—myself included, back then—this wasn't always exactly a delight. We didn't get coffee, either; instead, our Sunday treat was hot cocoa. I must say, however, that I benefited greatly from these walks—even in my schoolwork—and to this day, I find joy in my life (which has since become physically challenging) because I have remained deeply connected to nature for well over seven decades. I owe this connection to those Sundays and to the fixed schedule of our family gatherings. Incidentally, it was during those walks and excursions that I also learned how to build treehouses—and I’m sure everyone will understand that such an activity is, and always remains, a sheer delight. Warm regards 👵👋

If I have an appointment at 4 pm, I’ll be there by 4 pm (at the latest!).
If the person I’m meeting isn’t there by 4.15 pm, I’LL BE GONE.
I don’t waste my time waiting for other people.

Kaffee & Kuchen on Sunday afternoon was very typical in the past with the whole family at grandma´s place, but I think it´s dying out more and more

Germans like the dry dark British humour .

and we german are called cold because we don't start worthless smalltalks

my first time in the us:
waiter „how are you?“
me „how nice! my day was full of…..“.
never forget the face of the waiter 🤣

You can't move the lawn, or make noise or go shopping on Sunday (there are exceptions though), but you can go to a museum, visit a castle, a monastery, or a church. Go to a park, a national forest, or just walk on the countryside or in the city centre of a 600 year old town and have some lunch and beer in a nice restaurant. I'm not German, but I've lived there for a year and a half, and I always found something to do on Sundays.

Wait... what? Believe me, in sauna we don't stare. 😂

It is called "Kaffeetrinken" (caffee drinking) und includes Kaffee und Kuchen (cake)!! You can do it on every day of the week BUT at sunday you do it with your family!!

Haha, German here. Very recent story: In order to be able to greet my (many) guests as soon as they arrived at my 50th birthday party I thought I'd better be early. So I was roundabout 40 minutes early at the restaurant where we'd be celebrating. Still I wasn't the first; one aunt and my mother's cousins beat me there. Only two people were late: One had apologized in advance, because she had the Sunday shift. The other was a victim of "Deutsche Bahn". We had plenty of quality time to spend together, so I'm very grateful for this German habit.

Dans toute l'Europe le café est très important

Kaffee & Kuchen.... yep... it´s a thing... for me personally, not restricted to a sunday.

When I started working in Germany and watched comedy shows on TV I was just sitting there wondering what the funny part was.
After a time I noticed that they were actually very funny. That's when I realized that my understanding of the German language started to be really good.

Coffee and cake around 4 pm is a thing here in Germany. You do it with friends or with family.(more often with grand parents ;) ). Its the time for smaltalk xD
