Forget the comments section for a moment. What is the new Jaguar Type 01 actually like—and does it still feel like a Jaguar?
I’ve followed this car from the first pink Type 00 concept, through camouflaged prototypes and a drive at Gaydon, to exploring the finished production car. Now it’s time to look beyond the controversy and discover what Jaguar has actually created.
I’m Wayne Scott, Editor of Jaguar Enthusiast Magazine. Join me for a close-up walkaround of Type 01, an exploration of its interior and a look beneath the bodywork at the engineering that makes this electric grand tourer so different.
With up to 1,030PS, 1,365Nm and a claimed 0–62mph time of 3.2 seconds, it certainly has the performance. But what stayed with me after driving the prototype was the steering feel, the gentle rise of the nose under acceleration and the composure through fast bends. Does Jaguar’s familiar combination of comfort and power in reserve survive the switch to electricity?
We explore the “Impossible Panel”, the glass that seems to disappear into the roof, clever battery construction, the Tri-Apex Node structure, tri-motor all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering and active aerodynamics—with technical animations showing how it all works.
Inside, there are surprises too: an extraordinary central spine, carpeted doors that remind me of an XJ-S, E-type-like luggage space and a few decisions I’m still not entirely convinced by. I also explain why JLR’s press catering became my rather unscientific measure of charging speed.
This is an enthusiast’s account of what impressed me, what needs more time and whether Type 01 offers a convincing future for Jaguar.
What makes a Jaguar a Jaguar for you: its appearance, what powers it—or the way it makes you feel? Tell me in the comments.

This video combines a production-car walkaround with driving impressions of an earlier camouflaged prototype on Gaydon’s closed test track.
It is not a road test of the finished production model. Performance, range and charging figures are Jaguar’s published claims; real-world results depend on conditions.
