my friend used oil pastels for her art project, she did infact end up in tears🥀

In college (art school) I was forced to use charcoal once every week for 8 hours, and every day after class I would blow my nose and the tissue would be black

1:30 "Don't bite the hand that fingers you" 🧐?? I don't think that's the saying bro 😭🙏🏽

IMO watercolors are way harder to use than acrylics. You can always add a new layer if you made a mistake with acrylics, with watercolors you can't.

"If you want to look younger, oil pastels will make you look like you are 5 years old" Deff agree with that. I really respect people who can use them but for me....TEARS

The number one pro of drawing in Photoshop is you have every tool you could ever dream of.

Came here to say watercolor is tears for me, but then I tried gouache and it's everything I wanted watercolor to be - you can paint highlights over it and cover mistakes, and it cleans up just as easily. It feels more "direct"!

Great video sam!

I went to a school that had oil pastels compulsory. i can first hand confirm that i don't use it anymore

I can really recommend using watercolors and gouache together! I usually do the base layers of my paintings with watercolor and then switch to gouache once I need something that actually covers the paint beneath it. Also you can really use the fact that water reactivates gouache to your advantage when you messed up somewhere, because you have a good chance to get rid of paint in places you don't want it (also a magic eraser sponge can lift both watercolor and gouache off paper really well as long as you don't overdo it!)

God I hate acrylic. It’s too in between oil and watercolor/ gauche so it’s either waaaaaay too watery and thin, or dry and I cannot find the medium. I just… uuurgh. I’m in the “hate acrylic” team

"off you go to the cafe to be performative" sam is clocking people's tea with this one

Watercolor is hard. I know many artists who love and use watercolor regularly, and they still get very frustrated from time to time. People new to watercolor are often completely overwhelmed by water control and having to learn how every different color of paint has different pigments and behaves differently from others. For most mediums you can expect a beginner to draw or paint a nice evenly colored square. Not so with watercolor. It's a steep learning curve, but definitely worth it.

1:31 I thought I misheard it.. I clearly did NOT! 😃

13:25 I know it’s time for a detox whenever I “double tap” my sketchbook, or hold my pencil expecting a circle/line 😅

I love pastels, and I love oil painting, I live in Russia and I'm studying to become a designer, and we've been studying watercolors, tempera, and oil painting. And I'm a fan of oil painting, it's a revelation for all artists. But you said that you need a lot of layers, but that's not true, there are different types of oil painting, and we usually do half-figure paintings in two or three sessions. It's like three painting classes. Etudes are our homework, we draw in one approach, that is, we do a full portrait at once without drying. There are just the same techniques as in watercolor, that is, we draw in pieces and this method is called Ala-Primo

As a person who’s done my masters project with oil pastels, yes. I’ve mastered oil paint, and it took me a long time to stop fighting the medium and accept that oil pastels fit a special application field that I was unfamiliar with. It’s close to charcoal and I hate wholeheartedly charcoal. And yes, I went to therapy right after my masters.

10:34 - I don't want to nitpick, but Ghibli actually uses poster paints, which are really similar to gouache, but they are much cheaper and have heavier, more chalky or gritty pigments. Poster paints may also use starch as a binder, whereas gouache uses gum arabic. Generally speaking, Poster paints are also used by children or animators due to their easy availability and being less lightfast.

If oil pastels have a million fans, I’m one of them
If oil pastels have 5 fans, I’m one of them
If oil pastels have 1 one fan, that one is me
If oil pastels have no fans, I’m no longer alive
If the world is against oil pastels I’m against the entire world

Also I found that specific professional oil pastel brands make a difference (Mungyo and Neopastels are my besties),especially if they have muted earthy colors. Oil pastels are what I turn to when I’m tempted to use my fingers to blend my oil paints. 😊

Fun video! I spent 13 yrs drawing in an app called Sketchclub until I was diagnosed with dry eyes. One of the preventative measures to avoid dry eye is to cut down on screen time so I'm now looking at traditional art, having fun revisiting mediums. Since I love drawing and color, which I could easily achieve on the IPad, Iv decided to concentrate on Colored pencils. Now I'm trying to decide what kind and which brand! UGH 😂

I’ve seen some amazing art done with oil pastel. Its definitely medium i want to play with one day.  Maybe when i retire
