Lightning in a bottle. Forever in the firmament of stars

Years ago, when I was watching 'The Wizard of Oz' with my grandmother, she remarked that Judy Garland was 'a gift from the gods'.

This episode used to live on another channel, and when it disappeared—taken down for some unknown and unbelievably unfortunate reason—it felt like a small piece of history had been snatched away. I honestly thought I would never see it again. So to whoever brought it back: thank you. Thank you with everything I have. You’ve restored more than a video—you’ve restored a part of Judy Garland’s legacy that people like me, born decades too late to witness her brilliance firsthand, hold onto with all our hearts.

Because this episode… my God. It is one of the very best of the Judy Garland Show. Here, Judy is nothing short of electric. She is vibrant in her body, fierce in her humour, and absolutely unmatched in her voice. Her razor-sharp, self-deprecating wit dances right alongside those vocals that seem almost too powerful, too nuanced, too emotionally intelligent to have come from any one human being. The way she colours a phrase—the fire, the bite, the softness, the ache, the control—no one else has ever done it like this. No one ever will.

She wasn’t just singing. She was bending the air. She was sculpting meaning. She was taking the entire world inside her chest and releasing it in perfectly shaped phrases that still, all these decades later, make people like me stop breathing for a moment.

And the performing—her gestures, her timing, the way she used her whole body like part of the orchestra—Judy never merely did a number. She lived it. She loved it. You can see her soul in the smallest movements, the glances, the smile that flickers between humour and heartbreak. She was a singer, an actress, a dancer, a storyteller, a lightning bolt—something one-in-a-billion that can’t be taught and will never appear again.

What makes it even more emotional for me, knowing the history only through Lorna and the people who were actually there, is how much this show meant to her. Yes, the schedule was brutal—truly “murderous”—but she found joy in it. She loved working with the guests, she loved the routine, she loved having a purpose every day. And more than that, this show was supposed to be her way out. If the network had followed through on the four-to-five-year commitment they promised, it could have finally lifted the crushing weight of back taxes and given Judy and her family the stability she deserved so deeply.

But they never understood how to shape television around someone as spontaneous, warm, intimate, and larger-than-life as Judy. They tried to squeeze her into a format that could never hold her brilliance. They even put her against Bonanza, which still feels like sabotage disguised as scheduling. And when the show was cancelled, the financial security she had worked so hard for was taken away in an instant. The IRS swept everything. Just like that.

All of this makes episodes like this one feel sacred to me. Watching Judy here—glowing, powerful, funny, joyful, heartbreakingly alive—feels like getting to step into a world I never got to witness in person. I was born in 2006, decades after she left us, and yet somehow she remains one of the most important figures in my life. Through recordings like this, I get to see her at her height: fierce voice, brilliant mind, enormous heart, unmatched artistry.

This show should never have been cancelled. She should have been allowed to continue shining for all the world to see, because in episodes like this, you truly witness the full magnitude of who she was—singer, comedienne, actress, mother, fighter, and one of the greatest performers who has ever lived.

Whoever re-uploaded this, you have no idea what a gift you’ve given—not only to Judy’s legacy, but to people like me, who never got to breathe the same air as her, but still feel her impact every single day.

Thank you. Truly

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing this episode back. Some performances are more than entertainment—they are history, art, and the living legacy of a once-in-a-lifetime soul. Because of you, a new generation can experience Judy Garland's brilliance again. This means more than words can express.

Warm regards from Brazil. 🇧🇷

Only the incomparable Judy Garland can perform like no other. I wish I could’ve been fortunate to have seen her in concert but these vids are like being there. You truly can feel her passion coming through. ❤️

Watched this every Sunday night it was on. The best 60 minutes of TV with the most talented person of the 20th Century.

The show where they finally got the format right! Just Judy, a great big orchestra and a bag full of great songs. Thrilling, breathtaking brilliance.

I  love Judy Garland. I know her spirit is in everything beautiful. I have the stunning chance to embrace her in my next live!!

I love the ww1 medley- how she paced and modulated and created something no one else will ever match. Its been 50 years she says since WWI and its more than 60 years after that and she makes those songs still come alive with her unmatched artistry. Also I love how appreciative she is of talent. the way she respects and gives quiet and clear credit to the harmonica player. my love for her just grows and grows the longer she is gone. no other artist makes me feel so deeply like Judy.❤❤❤

Liza, Lorna & Joe must be overwhelmed with emotion if they see this.

I hate social media - but being able to see this, which was before I was born, is fantastic! ❤

We miss you Judy!

Thank you so very much for giving everyone with a most beautiful picture and the ultimate quality of this ultra rare Judy Garland tv performance from her TV Series show!🤗😱😍🥰

I'd like to think of a world where Freddy Murcury and Judy Garland  just sing together and judy would be happy.

Amazing, her outfits would be very much in fashion today.

Doing an overture on TV is time consuming and Judy was the only person who could get away with it! Her audience knew she was worth the wait and her overtures really revved up her audience and the suspense of her appearance from behind the curtain! ❤ Who is like this Dynamo?! The woman wasn’t called “THE LEGEND” for nothing!  She was peerless then and she still is peerless! Thank you for posting this video! I get chills every time she sings and no other singer can do that to me! God bless you dear Judy! We miss still miss and love you! ❤

Thrilling and exciting do not begin to describe her voice and talent for putting over a song!

What a TREASURE!!

Her digs at Bonanza are priceless, considering that was the show that she went up against, and she knocked out of number one in her premiere week. But they regained their number one spot. It was tongue in cheek and caddy but cute to see her humor joking about it, with style and grace! Such a class act!

Wonderful sound...we were all so disappointed that the series was recorded in mono...I bow to your skill! (hate the sepia)
