Hasan Ilyas has an exceptionally sharp mind. I say this as a lawyer myself the way he picks up an argument, identifies its weakest point, and then follows it through with precise counter-questions is very much how a skilled lawyer handles a difficult case. He listens carefully, catches the exact point being made, and then drives the argument home. That kind of intellectual presence is rare in religious community..

What struck me even more was that Hashir seemed completely unprepared for some of Hasan’s counters. At four or five points in the discussion, Hasan responded with questions that clearly caught him by surprise. You could actually see him pause because there was no immediate answer available. Hasan did not simply defend his position; he turned the argument around and forced the underlying assumptions themselves to be examined.
For me, this is exactly the kind of confidence with which religion needs to be represented today. The younger generation does not merely need emotional preaching. They need intellectual confidence. They need to see that religious ideas can enter a serious discussion, face difficult questions, and respond without fear or defensiveness.
And I can clearly see that confidence in Hasan Ilyas.
Whatever one’s agreement or disagreement with the Ghamidi school, Hasan Ilyas is becoming one of its most articulate and intellectually confident representatives. This discussion demonstrated that exceptionally well.
