2016 was an exceptional active year for earthquakes compared with most years of 2010s. Instead of one massive M8+ event dominating the year, it featured several significant earthquakes, including the M7.8 Kaikōura, M7.8 Ecuador, M7.0 Kumamoto, and M7.6 Chiloé earthquakes.

The Ecuador one traumatized me a lot when I was a kid and it’s incredible that 10 years later, I experienced my first earthquake on August 10th. Life is so curious.

0:07 I remember this earthquake; I had been living in Alaska since 2006, and I had felt strong quakes in 2009 and 2012, but this one was by far my strongest one yet. It woke me up when it happened at 1:30 in the morning, and I ran under the dining room table, and I watched all the cabinets in the kitchen fly open at the same time and dump glasses and mugs out of them and onto the floor, but only four of them broke. Water from the fish tank splashed out and onto the floor. It also caused some damage in the garage which was fixed the next morning.

Somehow this quake was more destructive to me than the November 2018 quake, but maybe it was because I was better prepared for it.

Something interesting in the Kumamoto sequence what that it could've continued with more ruptures. However, the fault runs into the bed of the volcano Mt. Aso where the fault becomes partially melted and therefore unable to continue breaking.

The Kumamoto quake also caused a separate quake (5.7) on a different fault line seconds after it began.
