For thirty years, Resident Evil has operated on one reliable principle: somewhere inside the Umbrella Corporation, researchers will look at a biological substance capable of converting humans into abominations and conclude that the obvious next step is further testing. Somebody then drops a sample, Civilization collapses, a laboratory explodes, and an exhausted protagonist finds themselves standing in front of something the size of an SUV with three shotgun shells and a medicinal plant.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil exploits why the games are fun, and as a horror-comedy it is inventive, grotesque and entertaining. It has the escalating absurdity of the games, the resource-starved survival structure, the grotesque Bio-Organic Weapons, the maze-like progression through increasingly hostile environments and the sensation that every locked door has been designed to waste your time. As a piece of survival horror inspired by Resident Evil, it works for the most part. As a comedy it is hilarious. As a faithful adaptation of Resident Evil, however, it is complicated.
