Plot Summary:
At a lavish party thrown by a wealthy socialite in honour of famed explorer Captain Spaulding, chaos and laughter erupt when a valuable painting goes missing. The irrepressibly witty Captain Spaulding arrives with his associates — the mischievous Professor, the scheming Signor Ravelli and his loyal secretary — and the search for the stolen artwork quickly leads to a series of comic misunderstandings, rapid-fire jokes, and anarchic antics. Between sharp one-liners, musical moments, and the Marx Brothers’ trademark brand of humour, the evening quickly spirals into hilarious bedlam that spoofs high society and keeps the laughs coming.

During the skit where Harpo is ‘fighting’ the grand lady and she is lifted off the ground and groans when he ‘punches’ her I literally was nearly sick laughing .. I haven’t seen this film for nearly 50 years and it stands up SO well in terms of physical and spoken comedy with anything modern - bless you for posting this iconic film , I haven’t laughed so hard in years , a genuine pleasure seeing this classic film again 🙏

When I was 12 I saw the Marx Bros for the first time on TCM. Back then I assumed everything black and white was boring. I was glued to the TV non stop laughs.

I remember my late father telling me about going to see a release of the film in the 1950’s. He brought his mother because she had seen it when the film was originally released with his father who had since passed. They arrived late to the theatre, during the part where the lights are off and Chico is asking for the “FLASH” no not the FISH!!” His mom kept going on about how his father laughed so hard when he saw the movie. But my dad wasn’t sure if they were in the right theater because it was dark, so he kept saying, “Is this the correct movie or what?” I was lucky to find a VHS copy in 1985 and my dad hadn’t seen it since that day. It still holds up compared with some of the other films of that day. “Three cheers for Captain Spaulding, We took pictures of the native girls but they weren’t developed, Abie the Fishman, Mrs Rittenhouse, Chico charging for not playing, Zeppo had the most lines ever, Harpo plays a beautiful solo and chasing a cute little blonde. It’ll be a hundred years old in four years. Truly immortal, it will be still entertaining centuries from now. I’ll stay a week or two, I’ll stay the summer though but I am telling you, I must be going.”

So a few of these moments dragged but I loved it so much. I'm pretty sure during the Bridge scene, Margaret is trying her best not to burst into laughter. And I think Groucho and Louis might have flubbed their lines during their scene and they just kept rolling. It is fantastic.

Wonderful job on the restoration. Still so funny, and it's great not to have the fouled soundtrack. I actually enjoy Harpo playing his harp; seeing him focused and intent is a treat. And Groucho's wordplay never ages.

I love the Marx Brothers & have all their films. Groucho's "interludes" crack me up. Margaret Dumont's ability to keep a straight face during those times & others was absolute magical chemistry, & would make the moments even funnier. A 96 year old movie that STILL rocks, having more substance & true comedy from all players, than anything out there today... & not 1 cuss word or sex scene. A masterful work from true masters of comedy. Thanks for posting!

This full refurbished movie is a complete joy. It even includes segments that were cut out by the Hayes Code such as when Groucho says he’s going to “make her“ referring to Margaret Dumont.(8:45) On every previous version of that segment, there is a rudimentary jump cut that eliminates that little segment. it’s refreshing to see it in it’s full glory.

This is STUNNING. Rock-solid framing, not a speck, scratch, or line, not a single missing frame... not even any film grain that I can see... while I can't see pores on skin (we're dealing with 1930 after all) the level of detail is exceptional, and even the sound is shockingly good for one of the earliest talkies. I genuinely don't know how you did this; does the blu-ray look this good? Did you have access to the original negative? Spectacular!!!
