GO CHECK OUT MY LATEST FRIEREN VIDEO COVERING THE REVOLTE FIGHT https://youtu.be/jp85xAa4BMA

Excellent analysis of Stark who is often overlooked and dismissed as a side character. Some think that Stark is a coward because he ran from the fight at his village. In a flashback, however, it is his older brother who tells him save himself. Stark was a child who could have done little in his village's defense. But Stark is haunted by having to run away. He believes that because he feels fear he is a coward.  Frieren, that sly elf, is slowly teaching Stark that feeling fear is not cowardice. When Stark feels fear but does not give in to it when confronting danger demonstrates true courage. When Frieren says she could fall asleep in a dangerous place because she trusts Stark to keep her safe, that carries a lot of weight.

"I trust my friends", "my friends believe in me" are two of the most used cliché one liners in the entire animanga history. The main characters always throw it around when the plot somehow needs them to have a last-minute power up to beat enemies... So much so that they have carried less and less weight.

Frieren also has something to say about trusting friends, worded somewhat differently "party can't function otherwise" but the point is still the same. I trust my party with my life.

But she doesn't stop there, she shows what weight it carries to be trusted by someone. There's a reason why she could sleep like they're in a five star hotel even when her magic is nullified.

It's not because she is careless or ignorant of her surroundings. Just like us, at first Stark also underestimated what she meant when she said, "I trusted you with my life", until that point when we all learn that Frieren actually really really means it.

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the triumph over it" -Nelson Mandela

Not going to spoil anything, but ma boy really gets to shine this season.

Starrk is a guardian warrior.
Been studying writing guardian characters, so hearing the word to describe Stark really caught me off guard. He is another good example! Thanks for making the video

this seasons first episode also shows a subtle hint to how strong stark and his intuation actually is that most poeple overlook,
when the monster drops and attacks he shouts to freiren to get up.
this is frieren the mage who deafted the demon king, who stark looks up to in a way, he knows shes powerful.
infact we have seen her be awoken by sein and instantlly obliterate the flower monster in seconds,
yet in mid sentence starks intuition kicks in and realises she wont wake in this instant and breaks at lighting speed and relfexes to rescue her with out even blinking.

That edit with wirbel fern and frieren was slick

my god you really opened my eyes with this one. When I first saw the scene, the only questions that came through was: Why is everyone pressuring Stark? Was this a test to make him tougher? While yes it is, it really shows just how capable of a person he is. With Wirbel, I never truly realized that his offer was a cry for help and he was so good at hiding it despite his backstory being told in the first season. Your editing is also insane. Amazing breakdown dude

finally a video about the goat.
i love how frieren starts as a pretty normal medieval anime, but as the story goes on it gets deeper without ever becoming heavy to watch.
it’s lowkey deep, full of small background questions that slowly hit you.
great stuff as always btw

The thing about Stark's character is, he was built around the idiom "Courage is not the absence of fear, but being afraid, and doing the right thing anyway." Stark lives and breathes this every time he's on screen. He's scared yes, a coward yes, but that never prevents him from acting, from protecting people when he needs to, from being the Vanguard. That's what makes him truly awesome as a character.

I love the concept of "a coward that ran from his home to survive" and I'm like "you survived that's the proof that you are not a coward but some one that knows when to fight"
To fight and to die from it is not bravery, it is stupid

when you ask for courage, you're not given bravery but instead something that you fear.

Stark is braver than most, because he is the only one who continuously fights and beats his own crushing fear. He sees himself as stark the cowardly, but I’m sure his party sees him as Stark the brave

"A warrior bound by duty can break. A guardian bound by guilt can resent, but a coward who chooses to stand his ground. That is the only vanguard who Frieren can consider a worthy party member." THIS.. This.. This is nice.

Stark is....A true hero. most of the ones I've encountered in my life as a volunteer fireman are all cut from the same cloth. Absolutely terrified.....But not only finds the strength... but ends up running toward the danger.... So no one else has to.   Whatever the danger encountered may be no matter the cost.

Stark has been my favorite character in Frieren since season 1 and I'm glad he is getting the recognition he deserves.

Every single moment in Frieren is crafted with precision. Every movement and action of a character is thought out. Every line of dialogue. Gosh, this is incredible.

I'm going to refute you a little here. Stark is cowardly, but he's not a coward. A coward is someone who runs because of their fear, Stark fights despite his fear. This makes him brave.
And you're right, it comes from being treated like a weakling as a child, he even thinks his brother telling him to run is because he's weak... But it's the opposite. In his final moments, Stark's brother knew they were not going to win. The strongest man in the village knew they were all going to die, but he wanted Stark to live, because he's got world shattering potential, even if he or their father don't see it themselves. His brother was his Vanguard in that moment. It wasn't about winning the fight, it was about making sure Stark made it out alive to realise his full potential... Maybe even defeat the demon that's about to wipe out his village, HIMSELF (and I fully believe that will be the case).
Through constant misinterpretation, Stark believes himself to be weak. He's not humble, he genuinely believes any terrifying moment is about to be his last, that's why he trains everyday, that's why there's a big fucking gouge taken out of a mountain, because the strongest man in the world is training to be stronger. So sure, he acts cowardly in the moment, But when he has people to protect he takes from his brother's example... And he protects them with everything he has.
And that is the mark of bravery.

Ahhhh my favorite character!! 🥹 His survivor’s guilt is somewhat complex, if I may share. He is not a coward; he has never been. We all fear something, but he didn’t label himself a coward initially.

He firmly believes he became a coward the moment he chose to heed his brother’s word and run away. Stark is actually smart, very grounded, and very reasonable. He doesn’t mind what others think of him, and he doesn't let his emotions dictate his actions.

Deep in him, he knows he will be wasting his life for nothing if he stays in the village. He’ll be a nuisance to the others as they try to protect him, too. However, it is a shameful path as a warrior and as a person. If he didn’t feel guilt, what would that make of him? He says it himself, he feels fear, but he acts, not out of duty, but it’s what he has to do, kind of like a reflex. His running away wasn’t cowardice. It was the correct thing to do. Almost as if he is responding to stimuli.

It’s as if he is trying to cling to the guilt to retain his humanity. Not that he’s a monster (yet), but he is very dangerous, as Eisen tells Frieren. Eisen, becoming extremely fearful of Stark, needs to be pinned.
