◆ The Never-ending War
Mother Han Bok-soon, who ran a small shop for 30 years, found joy in supporting her children, despite her limited means...
Yet, tears well up in her eyes when she looks at the photo of her five siblings in the corner of her room. Why do misfortunes strike so many at once?
Ten years ago, her youngest daughter, Seon-ok (29), began exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia. Her third daughter, Hyeon-ok (33, pseudonym), who had graduated from college, also suffered similar symptoms and was hospitalized in a mental hospital. Her only son, Byeong-cheol (31), went to the hospital as his older sister's guardian, but then, unable to bear the symptoms, ended up hospitalizing himself. The misfortune didn't end there.
Even her husband, a heavy drinker, began showing signs of dementia four years ago, and now he was a toddler, unable to control his bladder or bowels or speak properly. But the mother couldn't stand this reality. From caring for four patients to collecting waste paper to make a living... it's all a mother's responsibility.
◆ Invisible Illness... Mental Illness
People often say mental illness is a form of possession, or a mental illness caused by a lack of willpower.
However, mental illness is simply one of many "diseases caused by brain abnormalities," like cancer, diabetes, and the common cold.
The probability of developing a mental illness from birth to death is a staggering 20%. Anyone can develop mental illness, and with consistent treatment,
it's neither incurable nor intractable. However, misconceptions and prejudices about mental illness are driving those with mental illness out of the public eye.
◆ Back Home...
After consulting with a doctor, Mom obtained permission for her daughter, Hyun-ok (pseudonym), and eldest son, Byeong-cheol, to go out for the Lunar New Year holiday.
Returning home after a year, the siblings bow deeply before their father, who cannot recognize them due to dementia.
Celebrating the holiday with the entire family together for the first time in a long time, will this family have a peaceful time ahead of them? Just as the beginning was unknown, the end was also unknown... For the sake of the mother who sacrificed so much for her family, the family cannot give up hope.
