The Real Life Origins Of Vampires

Absolute History

In an age of science, one tale of the supernatural continues to seduce us: the legend of the vampire. Embodied in the persona of Count Dracula, this pale, elegant aristocrat lusts for blood, making him at once repulsive... and irresistible. By day, he hides his face from the light... by night; he escapes the velvet confines of his coffin and flaps off to drain helpless damsels of their lifeblood. At last, scientists are digging vampires out of their tombs to take a good, long look at them. What they're finding is a surprising factual side to the ancient legend. Fact may be stranger than fiction!

Some say the lifestyle of a vampire is something you could really sink your teeth into, but others say it sucks 😂

In olden times, during plagues, people would accidentally bury a person who was still living. They did it quickly because of contagion. The corpse was occasionally found to have tried to escape its grave and mistaken for being temporarily undead and then re-read because of being mistaken for dead when in fact they were only almost dead.

The thumbnail is fantastic. It looks like that Victorian lady saw a dude with demon wings and pulled him straight off the street in to her face

Founding out the “forest of impaled bodies” was actually one of the historically accurate bits of Castlevania… Well damn.

In this fictional fantasy obsessed society, every time a show or movie does the theme of vampires there always seems to be some truth to it- I can't explain why almost like its the most believable thing that could exist out there. As a child I loved being a vampire for halloween I felt so elegant and regal and powerful lol

The documentary has not stood the test of time with some facts that have been refuted, new excavations, and new studies. I'm also disappointed that the oldest "vampire" found wasn't even mentioned, Bulgaria has a lot of "vamps" laying around but they were not mentioned here which was disappointing. Apparently Bulgaria is not counted as a East European country in this documentary haha

Vlad Tepes was a brilliant leader. He learned all his torturous activities from the ottomans. He was also the first to use biological warfare. He sent a member of his military, younger lad, who had small pox to the ottoman leader nearest to his country. It worked rather well. Also, Egypt has tales of Vampires as well.

I remember studying this in anthropology, specifically an archeology class, and being fascinated 😊

In some rural villages in Romania they still may remove the heart, put spindles in the coffin, or pin the body down. They see it as helping the dead to pass on. And, they found some 6th century burials in Ireland where they put stones in the mouths or put stones on top the body to keep them from roaming.

Most people didn't understand that nails can look like it grew when people began to rot. I think Ask A Mortician talks about this.. also people had little known knowledge about disease and were superstitious. Many people also decompose differently based on soil composition. Also, impaling in the middle ages was very common as were other cruel punishments. Lot of rulers have dealt harsh punishments on their people to keep them in fear. He just happens to be the most well known due to the lore

Bran Castle has only been designated as Dracula's Castle for about the past 50-60 years. Even though they would like to dispel rumours, about Vlad Tepes, they're still cashing in on the tourist industry.

I wonder how they explained a vampire rising from the grave , drinking blood , then getting back into the coffin and perfect burying themselves back under the dirt ???!

there was that study about the disease somewhat related to vampires.
tuberculosis.
and when the victim died, well post mortem, the corpse will sometimes "move", though its more like a sudden jerk due to the blood exiting the body. which led people to believe that they are becoming undead.
