The Pol Pot regime is something we've been holding back for a long time, because its crimes are unmatched in scale and sophistication. However, beyond the brutality of Saloth Sar and his comrades, there's much to discuss. Why did this regime ultimately find itself in conflict with other countries pursuing socialism, such as Vietnam and the USSR? Was Norodom Sihanouk's Cambodia a prosperous developing country before the Khmer Rouge, only a few steps away from prosperity and wealth? Why are Vietnamese troops remembered more often in modern Cambodia than the Khmer Rouge fighting units? What were American troops doing in these jungles, and why did they have to leave? Overall, the story will be long and there are almost no good characters: only European and Asian colonialism, endless foreign interventions and internal coups, open and guerrilla warfare, plus repression, sacrifices, and the belief that it was all worth it.
