Far-right candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has pulled off a surprise win in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election. He defied most polls to win with 47 percent, compared to 45 percent for leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva. We spoke to Thomas Zicman de Barros, a research fellow at CEVIPOF, the political research centre at Sciences Po University, and columnist for our sister radio station RFI. He told us that never before in Brazilian history has a candidate who was behind in the first round then succeeded in the second.

Can't use Far left but uses Far Right like 50 times.

The problem in latin America is it being under the US economic umbrella. None of these candidates will solve this and so it matters little who wins. And latin American voters show this by alternating between "left" and "right" governments because they grow tired of the failure of one side and switch to the other only for the new side to fail too.

@4:40 "I don't think in the history of western democracy we had a President who was elected 4 times in a row"
Well, President Franklin Roosevelt was elected 4 times in a row.
And there are other examples: Angela Merkel won 4 elecitons in a row as well.

People should stop romancitizing as both candidates are terrible for the country, they're also both corrupted and authoritarians.

F24 is a far left denier
I lost count of how many times F24 used far right far right far right.
Are you still in doubt that F24 is ultra left ?

There is not much Lula can do to 'mobilize his base' so that he can win the election.
The results show a lower abstention rate in the typically left-wing areas and a higher one in the typically right-wing,
meaning that the mobilization of his base has already peaked. Neither can he count on the third candidates supporters who are not leftists.
Not to mention that the overpromising polls have now been proven out of touch, and the momentum is not in his favor.
