In this episode of P³, we react to Lights by Journey—a song that blends warmth, longing, melodic brilliance, and emotional openness into one of classic rock’s most comforting anthems.

As two musicians, we explore:
Why the melody feels instantly emotional and memorable
How the arrangement creates scale without losing intimacy
Steve Perry’s vocal phrasing and emotional sincerity
The balance between softness and arena-rock energy
How harmony and atmosphere create nostalgia without becoming sentimental

Every time a contestant on a talent show attempts a Journey song, I am reminded of how insanely good Steve Perry is.

Steve Perry, he doesn't show it in this song, but he was a great countertenor. Their song 'Mother, Father' gives a representation of his range.

This is about San Francisco, the "City by the bay." Journey formed there and became popular in that area before hitting it big. If you haven't seen a sunset in San Francisco you don't know what you're missing. This was one of the first Journey songs featuring lead singer Steve Perry. He was accepted into the band after the group's manager listened to his audition tape for only 15 seconds. Perry finished writing the song with Journey guitarist Neal Schon, who says they "banged it out in about 20 minutes.

Was fortunate to see Journey in concert in 1983 with Steve "the voice" Perry.

Beautiful song. Steve Perry's vocals at their best. A song about their hometown San Francisco. Do more Journey!

I know I’ve said this a few times but it’s very special. Watching both of young feeling and getting lost or in trance with these great songs. It’s a beautiful thing! 🙏

While gearing up for their comeback tour in 1996, Steve Perry, while hiking in Hawaii experienced a sudden pain in his hip. He was diagnosed with a bone degeneration that required a hip replacement. He put off the procedure to find alternative solutions. During that time, his bandmates gave him an ultimatum, to get a replacement, or be replaced. Perry decided to leave the band, and ultimately had surgery in 1998.

What a one of a kind voice Perry has. "Separate Ways" and "Send Her My Love" are two other favorites.

There is no denying how great a voice Steve Perry had and Neal Schon got his start in one of my favourite bands Santana.

This whole album is fantastic, packed with great songs. Easily their best.

Journey was the real deal. Thanks, Ladies, for sharing this one.

Ladies, you should do a deep dive into the Journey catalog like many of us have, so that you can fall in love with their music. Neal Schon, Journey's guitarist is excellent. I love his virtuosity, and his melodic ideas in his soloing.

Going to see Journey on Sunday night in Grand Rapids, at Van Andel Arena. In my view, the 1970s/early '80s was the best era of the band, when Journey had Steve Perry and keyboardist Greg Rolle (RAH'-lee), who shared lead vocals on classic songs like "Feeling that Way" and "Wheel in the Sky." That was Rolle on backing vocals on this song about San Francisco. He, of course, played for Santana at the most famous concert in history in 1969, at Woodstock. Perry, incidentally, picked up a hitchhiking homeless guy one day while driving on a back road near San Fran. The guy was heading to an AA meeting, if memory serves. Perry was stunned when he found out the guy he had picked up was Three Dog Night's Chuck Negron, the legendary singer who just died a couple months ago. Negron was moving into recovery mode at that point. Three Dog Night had something like 21 Top 10 hits from 1969-1975. Please review some Three Dog Night!

He has the brightest, warmest voice in all rock, love it, I gave feedback on a reaction on YouTube
years ago, saying that I got married using a song Steve Perry sang, Steve Perry sent me a message, and I called
The number he gave, very nice man, yes, we talked, and it was his voice, never forget it:hand-purple-blue-peace:❣
