The pointed sabatons were not a fashion accessory, they were for kicking men in the face while in stirrups this why they turned downwards, they were used all over Europe and could be as long as 18 inches... (google ....The armourer and his craft).
The first (taking into account the social customs of medieval combat) would be identification. As you no doubt mentioned in this video that heraldry and honor were kind of a big deal on battlefields back then. The second reason, rather than just to prevent superficial damage to ones armor (although I'm sure that would have been a concern, especially for expensive sets that took an entire career of combat to save up for), and likely the most practical use of a surcoat would have been from environmental factors. Let's be honest, wearing huge sheets of metal would either get extremely hot or ridiculously cold depending on the environment. That simple surcoat would have kept the baking sun or biting cold from beating directly on that armor. When fighting all day in extreme temperatures, that alone could literally be the difference between life and death.
Also, poleyn fan plates were not a 15th century invention. Rondels had begun being shaped into points and fans at least as early as the 1380s, as shown in the Quest del Saint Graal manuscript (c. 1385) from Italy.
Those armors are so pretty, cant choose a favourite.
same as me after waking up
