In this clip from In Focus, board-certified ophthalmologists Dr. Rupa Wong and Dr. Priya Mathews break down one of the most misunderstood parts of cataract care: when surgery actually makes sense.
They explain why the old concept of waiting for a cataract to be “ripe” is no longer how decisions are made — and how modern cataract care is centered on function, lifestyle, and quality of life, not age or outdated rules. From night driving and daily activities to confidence and independence, this conversation reframes cataract surgery as a proactive, individualized decision rather than something to delay indefinitely.

The next week, the day after I got my new glasses, I did a literal face-plant and broke multiple bones in my face. Including my maxillary sinus. When, after that, I started to get a "smudge" on my "glasses" (or so I thought) that I couldn't SEE on the glasses, but boy did I clean the heck out of my glasses, I figured the cataracts I'd only just learned about might be getting bad. For that school year, I put up with the fact that my vision seemed to be getting quite bad, and scheduled an appointment with my optometrist.
When he said "Tell me about your right eye," I thought it was the cataracts he'd mentioned. His response was "You do have mild cataracts, but that's not what's going on with your right eye." And he showed me the OCT (OTC?) and the ERM was pretty bad.
I keep thinking if the doc had brought up the cataracts in a more coherent manner, when he first noticed them, (because they were apparantly in his notes going back several years) I might not have ignored the sudden diminution of my eyesight after my face-plant (and that might not have caused it).
Then I saw a God Complex retinal surgeon who wanted me to try eye drops for 3 months to see if that would clear up my problem. (it didn't ... it couldn't... and it wasted my entire 10 week vacation).
Now I have vitrectomy scheduled with my second opinion doc, followed by cataract surgery (consult with surgeon tomorrow, hence how I came to this video)
