Brunei’s royal family is mourning the loss of Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah, who died at the age of 79.
She was the younger sister of Queen Saleha and the wife of Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the younger brother of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. But her place in Brunei’s royal family went far beyond those two connections.
Married to Prince Mohamed since 1970, Zariah spent more than five decades beside one of Brunei’s most prominent royal figures. Together, they raised ten children, while her family ties connected different branches of the royal household.
Following her death on October 6, 2026, members of Brunei’s royal family gathered for her funeral the following day.
So, who was the woman behind the royal title? And why did she hold such a unique place in Brunei’s royal family?
Her story is a reminder that a royal family’s history is shaped not only by the monarch and the heir, but also by the people whose lives connect the family across generations.
Watch until the end to understand why she was more than the Queen’s sister.
