South Africa came to know Bongani Luvalo as one half of one of the most talked-about marriages on Married at First Sight: Mzansi. But long before television audiences called him “the country's husband”, Bongani had already spent years asking difficult questions about men, fathers, relationships and the families we create.
In this episode of the King David Studio Podcast, David Mashabela sits down with Bongani Luvalo for an extensive conversation about the man behind the public personality — his upbringing, relationships, fatherhood, success, disappointment and the experiences that have shaped the way he understands masculinity today.
Bongani is an author, entrepreneur, speaker and social-impact advocate. He founded the Cool Dads Foundation, an organisation focused on responsible and emotionally present fatherhood, and has used radio, public speaking and his writing to address men's mental health, relationships, family and positive male identity. He is also associated with School Lashushu, a locally manufactured school-shoe business. SIR BONGANI LUVALO
But millions of South Africans encountered another side of Bongani when he entered Married at First Sight: Mzansi and married Portia Baloyi, a woman he had never met before walking down the aisle.
What followed became one of the show's most discussed relationships.
Bongani has subsequently spoken openly about the emotional toll of the experiment, his experiences with rejection and abandonment, the role therapy has played in his life and the difficulties that eventually led to the marriage ending. He has said that the relationship had already come to an end before audiences saw some of the drama unfold on television. Sowetan
The King David Studio conversation goes beyond the television headlines and asks a bigger question: what happens when a man who publicly advocates for relationships, fatherhood and family has to confront his own relationships and vulnerabilities?
David and Bongani explore love, masculinity, emotional honesty, fatherhood, rejection, responsibility and what men often struggle to say out loud.
The conversation also follows Bongani into an unexpected new chapter. In 2026, he joined SABC1's Generations: The Legacy in his first scripted acting role, playing Pastor Lawrence — a charismatic but deeply flawed church leader attempting to repair both his marriage and his reputation. Bongani has said acting was never part of his original plan, but that his long-standing interest in storytelling helped open the door. Sunday World
Bongani is also the author of A Father, A Stranger?, a project centred on South African men's experiences of fathers and fatherhood, as well as Ntliziyo Ungumkhohlisi – Falling in Love with an It Girl, which explores relationships, emotion and love from another perspective. SIR BONGANI LUVALO
This is not simply a conversation about a reality television marriage.
It is a conversation about what makes a man, what breaks a man, how fathers shape sons, why rejection can follow us into adult relationships, and whether we can genuinely become different people once we understand where our wounds come from.

Do you think South African men are given enough space to be vulnerable — or are men still expected to suffer quietly?
