Fishing With Russ Miller. The Guy That Showed ME How to Nymph

Red's Fly Shop

Fished with Russ Miller of Umpqau Feather Merchants for a couple of hours near the shop. Years ago Russ showed me (Joe Rotter) how effective a tight-line nymph rig can be and it was a revolution. Russ also came on The MEND Podcast with me and it's a great episode. Go find it on Apple or Spotify.

Thanks, guys! Super helpful.
INCLUDING seeing a true pro take a spill. Can’t tell you how oddly comforting it is for a learner to see that EVERYBODY gets wet every once in a while. 😊

Awesome outing guys!

Thanks for all the great tips. As a fairly new fly fisherman, I’m constantly fighting self induced tangles etc. Your sharing the details of things you do instinctively helps tremendously! Stay dry

Great information as always, thank you!
As for falling in the river. Last week during the snow fall while fishing the Madison north of Three Dollar Bridge I caught a fish so large it broke my pole. After retrieving my second pole and returning to the hole to see if he had a brother I stumbled on a rock and down I went, filling my waders. Not being nearly as young nor as agile as you I had to crawl on my knees in now chest deep water back to thinner water using my wading staff for support.

Cracking video Joe, that stretch of water reminds so much of one of my favourites on the river Tees in County Durham - right down to the dunking 😂

It really was funny, Joe! Thanks for volunteering that for us! Time for better boots and a wading staff! Love the tips and seeing the water so low. Cheers!

Thank you for this collaboration! It looks like Russ was not using a micro leader. Is that how he usually fishes?
How about you, Joe?
Thank you for sharing your insights !

I have a pair of small hemostats that hang around my neck that are about mid-chest. When I have to change a fly, I just put it in the hemostats upside down and I have two hands free to tie and the other fly just hangs down out of the way. When I'm done, I tuck them in my vest so they don't swing around. Try it. It's life changing.
